What Must I Know About Taking My Pet to a Foreign Country?

Regulations regarding taking pets into foreign countries differ from region to region, so you will need to research the particular country you will be visiting to determine what is required. However, if the area you are visiting as part of your hiking vacation participates in the Pet Travel Scheme (PETS), this article can provide information on that.

Some of the countries that do participate in PETS are the United Kingdom and Canada. If you are visiting these countries, here’s a little bit about what you need to know. This is not all-inclusive, however, so you may need to do some additional research.

You must first meet certain regulations, such as making sure your pet is current on rabies and other vaccinations. In addition, you must be able to verify that your pet has not been out of either a listed or non-listed PETS participating country within six months prior to traveling to another country.

Once you have met the initial requirements, because they participate in PETS, the United Kingdom and Canada do not require quarantine for your pet to enter the country. In those countries that do not participate in PETS, quarantine periods can be as long as six weeks.

Further, the United Kingdom and Canada do not limit the pets allowed to enter the country to just cats and dogs. Ferrets are also allowed to enter under the PETS policy. Not only that, but pets that were brought into the United Kingdom can be taken to other European Union countries by their owners, and will be allowed to enter the UK again.

In order to make sure that you can meet and stay up to date on all these requirements, consider obtaining pet insurance. This way, if your pet should require treatments for an illness or need updated vaccines, you would have the financial means to do so.

Washington Park Loop

Deception Pass, Washington
Image by UW Digital Collections via Flickr

This is a city park! Anacortes, Washington is a small Puget Sound town that is mostly ignored but for the ferry service that resides there. Hikers do not see this as a ‘destination’ which is why it’s a destination! If you are tired of the steep trails, the blisters from tough leather hiking boots and the biting flies, this may be your choice for a gentle and beautiful hike.

This is a 220 acre park right on the Sound. The park covers all of Fidalgo Head, a rocky peninsula with a forest covered crown. It is almost totally surrounded by water so elevation gain? Ha! Relax. You can walk it or bike it. Part of the trail lands you back on the road to re-connect with other trails, but it is a slow one laner with many speed bumps so no worries. You can sit on the beach and watch the ferries come and go as well as the occasional tanker and fishing boats. Since it is pretty much a local hang-out you won’t be inundated by crowds. It’s a lazy little town so relax. The light weight day-hike boots are fine here.

Get there from I-5 out of Seattle heading north for about 64 miles. Take exit 230 at Mount Vernon and turn west (left) to go under the freeway and follow the signs for Anacortes for about 14 miles. The highway has two designations: 20 and 237. Once in Anacortes, turn left at the sign for the Victoria/San Juan Ferry which is another incredible side trip one day when you have the time to trek into Canada and into Victoria BC. That is a wonder in its own right.

One final note: if you plan this trip right, do it in the spring when the tulips are in bloom. Mount Vernon is one of the world’s largest growers of tulips and daffodils. When in bloom, fields stretch forever with purples, reds, and yellows that are a shock to the system. You can walk through the fields in some cases and of course you can buy the flowers and bulbs.

Cruises are a Neat Opportunity

Have you ever played the game called “Lies?” Simply put, Lies is a game in which you go to a place where you have never been (and will probably never be again), and pretend that you are someone entirely different from who you actually are. This can be a very fun way to experiment with different ways to handle similar social situations — and if you really want to be strange, you can always try out those ridiculous pick up lines you found online. Or you could just walk around as if you were the king or queen of the world, confidence and power oozing from your every pore, and tell people the stories of your (made up) life to see how they react.

While most of the time this is a bad game to play, there is a time and a place for it. That time and place is on board a cruise ship. If you have ever taken a cruise, you know that it can be an amazing time to essentially be somebody else, if only for a few days. It can be really awesome to see how “the other half” lives. And the other half in question does not have to be the opposite end of the socioeconomic spectrum, either. They can just be “the popular people” or “the lusty people.” Simply take whatever you would generally classify yourself as, and be the polar opposite of that.

This can be an incredible opportunity to learn. You can discover new passions such as hiking. Hiking can help you connect with nature and other new people. And not just about your typical assumptions about life, either. You can try out things socially that you would not dare if there were people you know around. And you can also learn more by watching people interact. So when you shop around for cruise offers, think about what kind of person you might want to be in a far off place.
