For those who have become bored with kayaking on rivers and small lakes, take heart, there is another way to enjoy kayaking – sea kayaking. Sea (or touring) kayaks are an entirely different breed paddled in a much different environment. Sea kayaks are built for sailing on open waters – large lakes, bays and oceans.

By design, sea kayaks are seaworthy. They are longer and have a covered deck. Because they are essentially kayaks and meant for straight line travel without sacrificing maneuverability. These kayaks can be anywhere from 10 to 18 feet long for one person and up to 26 feet long for two or three paddlers and their supplies. These craft are built for trips of a few hours or several weeks.

Sea kayaks originated in Alaska, Canada and southern Greenland around 4,000 years ago. They were used primarily for hunting and fishing by the native populations.

Today, sea kayaks are also used for recreation in a variety of different locations and environments. In many cases, very little kayaking experience is needed. Glacier Bay, Alaska is a great example. These waters are home to whales, orcas and other wildlife

Another totally different environment for sea kayakers is North Carolina’s Outer Banks. These barrier islands along the state’s coast are home to Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge, ape Hatteras National Forest and the Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge. There are also many small coastal towns and historic sites along the Outer Banks that are worth seeing.

Down Easter Island, Maine boasts of some of the most rugged coastline on the east coast. The coastline is full of small coves and inlets that beg to be explored.

Another Alaskan sea kayaking paradise is Prince William Sound. The sound is protected from the ocean by mountains and glaciers and abounds in wildlife, including the bald eagle.

Cumberland Island, Georgia is considered to be the premier sea kayaking area on the east coast. The island is located in tidal marsh and is home to many wildlife species.

Atchafalaya Basin in Louisiana is a varied sea kayak trip that moves through bald cypress swamps, bayous and brackish water to end up coming out in the Gulf of Mexico.

Sea kayaking is definitely different and offers an interesting alternative for kayakers.

The kayak is similar to its relative the canoe in many respects. Both are used for water transportation and have a long history dating back thousands of years, The kayak differs from the canoe in that it have more top over and typically seats only one person. The kayak’s origins are also different and can be traced back primarily to Canada and Alaska.

First and foremost, anyone who is drawn to kayaking needs to be able to swim and be comfortable in and on the water. Beginners are strongly advised to learn how to navigate and paddle a kayak on calm water first. Pros suggest renting several kayaks to find out what works best before buying a kayak – it is an investment. It is worth noting that there are schools that teach novices all they need to know about safe and proper kayaking techniques. Another point worth making is that kayaking build upper body strength. As more paddling is done, upper body strength is increased and paddling becomes more effortless.

The new kayaker’s first few trips should be on still water such as a lake or calm river. It is always best to kayak with at least one other kayaker and to always wear a safety helmet and a personal floatation device (PFD). Once the kayaker becomes proficient on calm water, it is time to advance to new and more challenging kayaking environments like whitewater kayaking.

Where to kayak? Almost any facility or body of water that accommodates a canoe works for a kayak. There are recommended waters to paddle on in every state. There are also organizations that conduct guided group kayaking trips. These are great venues for learning to navigate whitewater.

One of the most recognized kayaking facilities in the United States is the U.S. National Whitewater Center near Charlotte, North Carolina. The facility was opened in 2006 and is home to the U.S. National Kayaking Team. It is considered to be one of the premier outdoor recreation centers. The center is particularly noteworthy because the whitewater is manmade from the nearby Catawba River.

As the weather starts to get warmer, mountain bikers begin to turn their attention to getting ready for a spring and summer of biking enjoyment. For others who have never tried the sport, it is a good time to start learning what mountain biking is all about.

Most mountain bike riders will say that they ride to stay fit because it is a great form of aerobic exercise. In the next breath they will say that it’s also about the challenge of completing a rugged trail. They enjoy the variety of trails – long and short, easy and challenging.

Like any other sport there are rules. This is especially true for the beginner. Experts advise novices that the first step is to take time to select the right bike. While many bikes are lightweight and allow more speed, most bike riders recommend a full suspension mountain bike because it is more comfortable and has better control in rugged terrain.

The next step is to prepare and assemble the gear needed for a ride. The key to preparing is to think “self-sufficient.” That means to carry what is needed – plenty of water, the tools and supplies needed to maintain the bike, food and to always wear a helmet.

Where do mountain bikers ride? One of the favorite riding areas is the national parks and forests located throughout the United States. Most of the same trails that are used by hikers can be ridden on a mountain bike and there is usually a park or forest near any town or city in the states.

There are also private mountain bike riding trails in many areas of the country. Here are some of the recommended beginner to intermediate mountain bikes riding trails for new riders:

When most people think of skiing, they think of downhill skiing and slalom. It may come as a surprise that downhill skiing has an equally popular cousin – cross country skiing. Cross country skiing has been a means of transportation in northern Europe and Asia for 5,000 years and has built an avid following as an exercise and sports activity.

In the United States there are several hundred cross country ski trails throughout the states, particularly in New England, the western states, and the northwestern Pacific coast. Cross country skiing venues can be divided into two camps, so to speak. Experts will be quick to note that many of the national parks and forests have systems of ski trails for experienced skiers. They point out that the trails are extensive and less expensive to use. Accommodations can usually found in nearby town at much less expensive rates, too.

For beginning cross country skiers, ski resorts are probably a safer place to start. Most downhill ski resorts also have cross country ski trails. While resorts tend to be more expensive, the trails are clearly marked and kept in good condition. There are also instructors available for the first time cross country skier. Many of the resorts have warming huts along the ski trails.

Some of the resorts are interesting and unique. Adirondacks, New York was the home to the 1932 and 1980 Winter Olympic Games at Lake Placid and boasts of six million acres of ski trails and an Olympic Sports Center. Further north in Stowe, Vermont, the famous Von Trapp family established the Von Trapp Family Lodge, a cross country ski center, after fleeing Austria during World War II.

At Mount Bachelor Ski Resort in Oregon, cross country skiers can ski in June – and get a tan. The resort is also the training center for the U.S. Cross-country Ski and Biathlon Teams in the spring.

Royal Gorge in Soda Springs, California sits in the Sierra Nevada Mountains and claims to have the largest cross country ski resort. Tenth Mountain Division in Colorado is names after the first Army unit in World War II to be trained to fight on skis. The facility has an impressive 270 miles of ski trail and 29 warming huts.

Snow skiing is an international winter sport. It is also one of the most watched events at every winter World Olympics. Not surprisingly, skiing was a means of transportation long before it became a popular sport and competition event.

“Ski” is a derivation of the original translation and means “stick of wood.” Skis are believed to have evolved from snowshoes and were used extensively in northern Europe and Asia as long as 5,000 years ago. The first evidence of skis as bones from large animals was found in Norway and Switzerland, and the oldest recorded ski dating back to 3200 BC was discovered in Sweden in 1924. Evidence of skis being used during this period has also been found in the Sayan Mountains of Asia.

There were originally three different types of skis that were used primarily for cross-country travel. The Fennoscandian ski has a horizontal toe-piece binding that was often covered with fur. This ski was the forerunner to the Telemark ski. The second design, the eastern Siberian ski, was a thin board that had a vertical four-hole binding. There were also two different types of ski pole. The first was a walking stick that was used for balance. The second type of pole was made from a spear or a bow and had some degree of flexibility. When two of these poles were used, the skier was able to travel at higher speed.

Sondre Norheim of Telemark, Norway is regarded as the father of modern skiing – at least in Norway. He is credited with inventing the “birch” binding that allowed skiers to ski without the risk of loosing their skis. In 1870 Norheim is believed to have designed a short curved flexible ski that made it easier to turn in soft snow. However, there is little evidence to support the claims of Norheim’s inventions because most of them were already in existence.

Ski-jumping and cross-country skiing became official events at the 1932 Olympics at Lake Placid, NY and in 1936, downhill and combined slalom skiing were add as events at the Olympics held in Germany.

One of the world’s favorite water adventure activities is scuba diving. Divers have many different reasons for spending time underwater. Many of them are sightseers and photographers; others are searching for ship ruins and artifacts. They are all part of a pastime and profession that has been around for centuries.

Underwater diving originated in societies where fishing was a main source of food. Divers trained to hold their breath for long periods would go under the water to catch fish or harvest shellfish from the bottom. Recognizing that the longer divers could stay underwater, the more food they could catch, ingenuity took over and new ideas were born.

The reed was the first snorkel. However, while divers could stay under longer, they could only go a few feet below the surface. Diving bells made of wood were used as early as 1600. The bells allowed divers to submerge for longer periods and get air trapped at the top of the bell by going under and up into the bell.

The first diving suits made of leather were designed in the early 1800s, allowing a diver to go down to 60 feet. During the same period, diving helmets were designed that allowed air to be pumped into the helmet from the surface. A solution that would allow divers to work independent of air supplied from the surface still persisted.

In 1825 the first truly self contained diving system was invented. The compressed air supply was contained in a belt worn by the diver and allowed him to stay under water unfettered for longer periods.

The final solution for a system that would allow divers to dive using a self-contained and regulated air supply was invented in 1942 by world famous water naturalist Jacque Cousteau and Emile Gagnan. The “aqua lung” allowed divers to go deeper and stay longer. During World War II, the aqua lung acquired the military acronym SCUBA for “self contained underwater breathing apparatus.” The acronym stuck and scuba diving began growing into the popular activity it is today during the 1950s.

Canoes are synonymous with Indians and while North American Indian tribes living near water are credited with building the first canoes, there is more to that history of these water craft. Archeologists have found evidence of canoes being in used in North America as far back as 6000 BC. Polynesian tribes were also found to be using canoes for several thousand years.

The first canoes were dugouts – made from hollowed out and shaped tree trunks. These canoes carried as few as two people and as many as 12. Among some tribes, particularly in Polynesia and the Caribbean, war canoes with an outrigger for stability could be as long as 130 feet. These canoes were seagoing craft and could travel from island to island. There were even longer double hulled canoes equipped with sails that could carry up to 100 people.

Over time, the North American Indians developed a lighter and more maneuverable canoe. The frame was composed of wooden ribs and covered with birch tree bark. Bark was chosen because it is waterproof. The canoe’s joints were held together with pine root and coated with hot pine tree rosin to complete the waterproofing process. When the Europeans came to the New World they were fascinated by the ingenuity of the craft and began using canoes to travel by water. Canoes became so popular that the first North American canoe factory was built in Trois-Revieres, Quebec around 1750 to accommodate the growing fur trade. Some of these canoes could carry twelve people.

During the 1800s canoes also became popular as a recreational craft. John MacGregor is credited with introducing the first recreational canoe. In 1924 the canoe was first demonstrated at the 1924 Paris Olympics and became an official sport at the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin.

Whitewater canoeing became a popular extension of canoe sports after World War II and became an officially recognized sport at the Olympic Games in 1972.

Trekking the North American outdoors is a popular recreational activity. If you’re an outdoor enthusiast, looking up an insurance quote may not be the first thing that occurs to you when preparing for your next outdoor excursion. However, whether you will be hunting, fishing or hiking, the wilderness does present its risks. You want to be sure that you are protected in unexpected circumstances.

The Exciting Outdoors

Hiking a beautiful mountainous trail, fishing in a pond or hunting deer are ways to enjoy outdoor environments while getting exercise, relaxing and picking up some fish or deer meat for dinner. It’s common to focus on the positive aspects of getting away from the day-to-day routine and avoid thinking about what might possibly go wrong on such an excursion.

The Challenges of the Outdoors

Outdoor activities remove you from your daily, comfortable surroundings. Unless you live in the wilderness, you don’t come into contact with bears, snakes, alligators, wolves and mountain lions on a daily basis. You can learn how to keep yourself as safe as possible, but even so, that can of mace may not be enough of a protection to keep bears and other dangers away.

When spending time outdoors, you also deal with environmental and weather hazards. You might experience frozen ground leading to slipping and falling. Muddy terrain and unstable patches of ground can also cause accidents.

How Getting an Insurance Quote Can Help

Given all of the things that can potentially go awry in an outdoor trip, getting an insurance quote prior to your trip can give you assurance. There’s no telling what can happen when you’re out hunting deer. You have no control over a nearby novice gunman. Whether you’re dealing with unstable terrain, wild animals or rookie hunters, purchasing insurance prior to your trip can ultimately result in greater medical care and a savings to your wallet. With such precautions in place, you can relax and enjoy your outing.

Mountain climbing is a sport that goes by several other names – alpinism, mountaineering and rock climbing. All these names are synonymous with a popular sports activity that requires fitness, agility, stamina, endurance and the right mental attitude. Mountaineering requires fitness and is ultimately about the challenge of climbing to the top.
Mental attitude is a key factor because mountain climbing can be dangerous. First and foremost, experienced climbers should always climb with another person. They must be constantly aware of their environment and alert to potential dangers like rock slides and poor footing.
Climbing mountains is, like many other sports, a learning process. Seasoned climbers recommend that people who are interested in the sport “aim low” and start with short climbs or at a climbing gym. A gym gives the potential beginner a sense of what mountain climbing is like. Another suggestion is to take a short course at a mountain climbing school. There are good schools around the country. Mountain climbing clubs are also a good place to learn about and try the sport out.
For those who discover that they like mountaineering, the next level is to try “walk-up” mountains. These are non-technical climbs that require no special equipment and will test climbers’ endurance and confidence start with low elevation climbs and working up to higher climbs. In the United States, two of the better known high walk-ups are California’s Mount Whitney (14,490 feet) and Colorado’s Mount Elbert (14,433 feet).
The next step climbs are moderately steep snow capped mountains like Washington’s Mount Rainer (14,411 feet) and Mount Baker (10,770 feet), and California’s Mount McKinley (20,320 feet). The height of these mountains is deceptive in comparison to the walk-up mountains because these climbs require more skill, experience and the use of specialized equipment to reach the peak.
Mountain climbing is great exercise and an opportunity to go enjoy the outdoors in an entirely different way. With time, determination and experience a beginning climber can become an experienced mountaineer

It’s an assumption of concrete, the endless towers of glass and steel. A city is believed to be without intrigue — its attractions all soaked to strangers and their demands. There can be no adventures within the stone borders. There can be no thrills. It’s just another dull collection of buildings and sterile beauty. You can’t find the excitement you need there. You can’t even find the joy.

All San Diego property management is thought to be an exercise in profits. Each mile must be devoted to nothing beyond high-rises and higher budgets. This holds no fascination for you, though — not when you’re seeking to explore the true meanings of a vacation.

But there is more to this city than its easy efficiency and you will discover instead a wealth of natural wonders: each certain to impress.

Consider touring the Torrey Pines State Reserve, with its cliff-side paths and ocean views (sure to inspire). Search for gray whales and their migrations among the Point Loma coast. Explore the Cleveland National Forest and its 460,000 acres — a staggering network of trails, trees and wildlife. Hike along the miles of Razor Point to indulge in vistas and Pacific scenery. And even scale craggy walls within the Rose Canyon Hiking Park. The possibilities are endless.

The notion that San Diego is a standard city is too often believed (and too often accepted). It is instead a diverse tangle of the typical amusements and the unexpected treats. Its outdoor excursions rival any throughout the world — and you will experience nature as you never thought possible.

It’s the trip of a lifetime. It’s the chance that must be taken.

You’re craving more than stone and sleek architecture. You want days instead that are laced with good intentions. Now you can have them.

San Diego is a delight that shouldn’t be denied. Prepare for the uncommon and the unforgettable.

The Wasatch Range is a mountain range spanning 160 miles from the Utah-Idaho border to central Utah. It is located in some of the most pristine and beautiful country in America and also boasts to be one of the most accessible mountain ranges. The range is home to 11 ski resorts and claims to be home to some of the most frequently used canyon roads in the United States. The Wasatch boasts countless marked and unmarked trailheads, ranging from easy hikes to strenuous mountain climbs.

The most frequented canyons in the Wasatch are Little and Big Cottonwood Canyons. Only a half hour from the Salt Lake International Airport, Little and Big Cottonwood Canyons are home to some of the most famous ski resorts in the world. Alta was rated the best skier’s mountain by “Ski” magazine and holds the distinction of being one of only three ski resorts that only cater to skiers. The other standout resort is Snowbird. Along with Alta, it was rated the number one North American ski resort by “Skier” magazine.

While the winter beauty and notoriety of the canyons cannot be surpassed, many people flock to the Wasatch canyons in the summertime for the epic hiking and other summer mountain sports. On any given warm summer day, you will see people riding triathlon bikes, trudging up 45-degree angle roads, and rock climbers. When attempting either of these sports, you should make sure you are prepared. Have the proper equipment and use a guide when necessary.

With a locals-only cave that is known to run over 3,000 feet deep, make sure you have a guide and don’t try caving alone. Regardless of what sport you choose to do or the season you go, the Wasatch Range offers a multitude of outdoor recreation second to none.

It is amazing to see what people go through when they decide to backpack without honestly making the effort to be prepared first. Your feet? They are either your Road Ranger or a skate board with broken wheels. Which do you want when you are ten miles from the trial head?

You can go to the specialty stores and purchase the best boots imaginable and spend hundreds doing so. Asolo, Vasque, Patagonia, Soloman . . . the brand names are endless, but the brand name does not get you what you need. Each manufacturer creates boots for certain specialties. That means you need to go to the store knowing the kind of terrain you are going to travel. Which will you get for high alpine climbs on snow fields? Vasque Breeze Gore-Tex or Asolo TPS 520 GVs? You better know the difference. You also need to know that the best boot will leave you disabled if it has not been fitted by a professional. This is not retail rhetoric. It’s a reality. Let the wisdom sink in so you don’t have bleeding toes!

Socks are critical to the safety of the two things that transport you up and down again. A big thick pair of wool socks, right? Maybe. Maybe not. If you have never hiked or are not an avid runner, you need to know about layering of socks: a very thin synthetic on the foot covered by wool or cotton on top. That way the socks rub on socks instead of boot and sock rubbing on skin. However, even that precaution will not protect your feet completely. You need to have worn the boots enough to know where the rub-spots are and cover those spots with adhesive tape for further protection. And if your feet are most tender, don’t forget to pack Second Skin.

The comfort and safety of your feet is perhaps the number one item on your list of to-dos before gearing up with any other of the needed items. Without your feet, you’re in painful nowhere. Do your research. Enjoy your journey.

Hiking is a sport and activity of solitude but that doesn’t mean you have to do it alone. As you are planning your next hiking trip, you’re probably generating interest among family and friends who want to enjoy the quiet and the peace of the great outdoors. Here’s the only problem: You fancy yourself to be a serious hiker and you want to plan a trip with the right people. Your regular hiking buddy can’t go, so who do you bring with you? Just like alternative cigarettes, there are a lot of choices, so make sure you think through your options.

Be Wary of Newbies

Look, everyone thinks they can hike, but then they get out there and it’s a lot tougher than they thought. You don’t want to have a hike planned only to get out there and realize that your companion can’t make it through half of the itinerary. It’s no fun having to forgo part of a great hike in a place you’ve never been before just because someone can’t keep up. That’s why its so important to make sure you bring active people. It might be worth it to bring along athletic people, even if they’ve never hiked before, because you know they will keep up.

Good Conversation

Here’s a rule that you should follow: You need to spend your hiking trip with someone who can do two things for you. First, you want someone who can enjoy the silence with you. Someone who is a chatter box or who doesn’t know when it’s quiet time isn’t a person you want with you for a hike. Second, the person needs to be able to make good conversation. You don’t have the bright lights and loud bars of a city. You just have the two of you and amazing conversation. Select a companion who can bring that.

Given the geography and history of the southwestern part of the United States, one can imagine certain sports being more prevalent than others. Think of a whole host of sports that require dust, dirt, and open expanses of desert. Images of cowboys being flung to the ground by rampaging bulls and bucking broncos come to mind, as well as 4×4 off-road vehicles flying through the air as they race from one ridge to the next. You can hike all the time in the beautiful places.

What is it about the Southwest that brings out the cowboy, whether riding a horse, a bull, or in a Ford Bronco? Along with activities like roping calves and breaking horses are the indoor sports, or what one might call “saloon sports,” such as darts, cards, and pool. Perhaps the heat drives people to the cool of an indoor saloon to enjoy a tall drink and something less strenuous than wrestling a 1,200-pound steer.

Custom poker tables, pool tables, and dart boards are highly coveted items in the Southwest, in terms of sporting goods. They are almost required in a home or business for the residents to be socially acceptable. Imagine the social status conferred upon someone with custom equipment in a region that is known for its innovation, especially when it comes to off-road vehicles.

Another well-known Southwest sport is the professional baseball game. Every spring in the Phoenix, Arizona area brings the Cactus League games, which are played by 15 major league teams. The main team, the dean of the Cactus League clubs, is the Chicago Cubs, which first began training in Mesa in 1952. The prices for the games are extremely reasonable: $5 for a lawn seat, $25 for a bench. Each professional team has its own stadium, and most are within a 30-minute drive of Phoenix.

Sports can be great fun, and also a great way to relieve stress. Not everyone plays them, but even watching from the sidelines with friends and family members can make for a great time with a lot of laughs and excitement. Buying sports equipment can be costly, though, and some sports cause this equipment to wear out fairly quickly. If you want to set up a sports budget, you can do that in several different ways. One of these is with a prepaid card, so you don’t spend too much when you shop. It’s a good idea to have a set amount.

There are other great ways to save for the sports equipment you want and need, though. You can have a savings account that’s specifically for your sporting adventures, or you can have a sports fund where you save money in a jar or can – like many people do with their spare change. These are all great ways to have money for your sports equipment when you need it. That’s important, too, because you never know when your favorite store is going to run a great sale on something you want or need to buy. Keeping your eyes open for these sales can help you expand your sporting life without breaking the bank.

Make sure you get safety equipment, too. You don’t want to get hurt and have to sit out when you could be playing. Protecting yourself is important. If you have kids who want to play sports, be sure that you’re setting a good example. You don’t want them getting hurt because they were trying to be like you and disregarding safety equipment when they play sports. It’s not that hard to protect yourself from most sports injuries, so take the time to get the proper precautionary equipment, and you’ll have less to worry about.

Hiking is a great way to enjoy the beauty of the outdoors, get some exercise, and explore new places. Being prepared for a hike is the best way to ensure that it is fun and comfortable for everyone involved.

Preparing for a hiking trip is easy. Make sure you have the following on hand when preparing for a hiking trip:

• Proper attire. Make sure you check the weather before you go for a hike. If it’s an all-day hike, layering is ideal since it is typically cooler in the early morning and evening than in midday. If you’re going to be hiking through water, consider wearing a bathing suit underneath or clothes that dry quickly. Proper hiking shoes are essential, as well as thick socks to prevent blisters.

• Sun protection. This is crucial even if it’s cloudy. Make sure you bring sunscreen with you as well, and reapply often. A high SPF that is waterproof and sweat-proof should be sufficient. A hat is also a good idea, as well as sunglasses.

• Water/food. It’s important to bring plenty of water. Some hikers opt for backpack-type water containers that take up less room than bulky water bottles, or you could just toss a few water bottles in your backpack. Bringing a couple of frozen bottles is a good idea too, as it will melt as the day progresses and ensure you have plenty of cool water to drink. If you’re going to be gone for awhile, a sack lunch or some granola bars, mixed nuts, or trail mix are good options for a quick snack that won’t slow you down on your hike.

• Maps or directions. If you’re hiking in a popular, well-known destination with clearly marked trails, this is not as important. But if you’re roughing it, make sure you have an updated map and a way to get help if necessary.

You always need a place to stay. Ever wanted to wake up to the smell of breakfast on a chilly morning in a small village tucked away in the mountains? Remember vacation rentals are not only for the beach.

Being properly prepared will make sure your hike is a fun experience for everyone.

Hiking is a great sport and excellent exercise. While it may seem that hiking is as simple as finding a trail and walking, there is more to it than that. These hiking basics will help beginner hikers learn hiking and nature etiquette and tips so their hiking experience will be fun and enjoyable.

1) Stay on the trail. Sometimes it’s tempting to veer off of the marked trails you’re hiking and go exploring on your own, but it’s in your own best interest if you stay on the trail. It’s easy to get lost, and even if an area looks safe at first glance, you never know why an area may be marked restricted.

2) Respect nature. Don’t pick flowers, capture or feed wildlife like frogs or lizards, or tuck articles in your backpack as souvenirs. Nature is meant to be enjoyed by everyone. In some national parks and places, it is actually illegal to remove or disturb natural artifacts and surroundings. At the same time, never litter and make sure you follow guidelines for proper trash and waste disposal.

3) Choose your hikes carefully. New hikers start slow and pick a few easy day hikes to start with. Then you will get a good idea of your actual fitness level and hiking basics, like how often you need to rest. When choosing a hike take into account such things as altitude (higher altitudes can make breathing more difficult), your fitness level, steepness of the hike, and length of the hike.

4) Be prepared. You should always be prepared for your hike. This means taking enough water and snacks or food on your hike, depending on the length, making sure you are protected from the sun with plenty of sunscreen and hats, and dressing appropriately for the climate and duration of your hike.

These hiking basics are important for anyone who is new to hiking.

When it is raining and you can’t go hiking, you can always try sports betting. It is a fun alternative to hiking–less tiring too!

Sports betting is a fun way to gamble. If you do it well, it won’t ruin you financially and it will provide you with some great entertainment. Gambling experts have written tons of books dealing with sports betting, and you can probably learn a thing or two about sports betting if you read some of them.

What sports betting books will never tell you, however, is just how exactly to become great at sports betting. There are some tricks to learn; follow them well, and you will become a professional sports bettor in no time.

The cardinal rule of sports betting is never bet on a sport for which you have little passion, even if you know that sport very well. For example, you may watch basketball and can tell people the names of all the great basketball players in the last century. But if football is your passion, and football is the game you wish you could have played yourself, then that is where your passion lies. So, bet on football. Don’t bet on basketball.

There is simple psychology to back this up. Betting, like many things, is a mix of science and art. Mostly, it is an art; you need to have that strange knack for knowing things about teams, players, and the games they play. You do not develop this knack by merely accumulating facts. You need to have passion to develop a feel for a game and the players who play it. If you are not passionate about basketball, you will never have that instinctual inner nudging that will help you uncannily predict the outcome of a game. You may know all the statistics, but only a passionate interest in a game will make you a good predictor of that game. Therefore, bet only if you are passionate about a game, and you will not go wrong.

If you like to place wagers through sportsbooks, you’ll want to keep abreast of changes for professional sports teams. It can be surprising to see how a new addition or cut can affect a team. Cut players have the motivation to settle the issue on the playing field once they sign with a new team. Sometimes, the influence of a new coach can bring out hidden talent. Not all changes to the roster help a team. If a player brings baggage, attitude, or grudges to practice, it can negatively affect the working relationship of the team. Some players may not like the changes, especially when they have no say in the decision.

New Orleans Saints fans will want to pay special attention to the lineup for the year. The team re-signed Harry Coleman and cut running back Lynell Hamilton. The Saints signed Coleman in the off-season before releasing him before training camp. Now he’ll be back on the team as a safety/linebacker.

The decision to cut the second-year player came after Hamilton tore his ACL during a practice in New England the night before the pre-season opener with the Patriots. To qualify for injured reserve, a player needs three years of experience, which Hamilton lacked. He joined the New Orleans Saints in 2008 as a free agent at the NFL draft. For most of his rookie season, he stayed on the club’s practice squad. In 2009, he started in one game and played in nine. His stats included two touchdowns and rushing 125 yards.

Hamilton’s injury may allow running backs Chris Ivory and P.J. Hill to step into the limelight, or the Saints may decide to cut another player from the roster and sign a new running back. The changes are sure to affect the team, but fans will have to wait to see whether the Saints thrive or crash.

One of hiking’s subtypes is underground – literally. Caving. It’s exactly as the name implies. Hiking in caves. Like mountaineering or canyoning, caving (or spelunking) can involve a variety of hiking and climbing technique, and depending on where you are caving, it might even involve a bit of swimming or kayaking too. It’s an outdoor sport with a truly indoor mentality.

In caves, you will get chances to see wildlife and mineral formations you may never get to see on the surface of the earth – bats, spiders, worms, and even fish. And to the educated eye, a journey underground is an exploration of earth’s diverse and often violent past. Underground you can see millions of years into earth’s history, with fossils, sediment lines, and formations that have taken millions of years to arrive where they are now.

You should never go caving alone. Some cave systems have hundreds of miles of complexity, and if you get lost, there may be little or no chance of survival. Light is your best friend underground, and without a guide, and especially without light, one wrong step could mean a hundred-foot plummet.

Some caves are more well-explored than others, and there are usually guided tours through some of the more popular caves in the world. A lot of American caves, for example, have already been explored and you can see their tour advertisements listed on billboards for tourist attractions along most of America’s cross-country highways. Though, despite the casual appeal, there is a serious pursuit behind the practice, and new ways to challenge yourself as a hiker, climber, and caver.

If you’re caving, having a good light source and cave-map are extremely helpful. Cave systems are like earth’s capillaries, and are just as three-dimensional. If you’re not sure where something goes, don’t go there. It’s a simple rule to follow as you plummet into the bowels of the earth.

Though nature and its beauty has been romanticized by poets, photographers, and other artists for thousands of years, it can also provide a wide host of dangers. For the safety-conscious hiker, being aware of these dangers can – in some cases – make the difference between life and death. Different areas of the country pose different types of threats, so preparedness begins with one simple maxim: know where you are.

A lot of people have been deterred from all types of hiking altogether, as a fear of nature seems to be an endemic philosophy in our technological society. It is often portrayed in modern films as dominating, terrible, and absolutely unforgiving. While nature does operate with its own medium and mode, it is partially nature’s indifference which makes it so beautiful. Though it may be a bit abstract, it is important to regard nature as having a mind of its own, and approach it with respect and awe. In other words, serve it, and let it serve you.

Part of the process of respect begins with familiarizing yourself with the flora and fauna of the area. For example, diamondback rattlesnakes are much more of a threat in the Arizona deserts than they are in the Pacific Northwest. The English Yew, on the other hand, with its poisonous evergreen branches and toxic touch, is all over the Pacific Northwest, but nowhere to be found in the hot swamps of the Florida Everglades. Knowing what plants are poisonous, being able to identify toxic berries and mushrooms, and knowing venomous and non-venemous animal species involve a lot of research, but for the serious hiker, this knowledge can save your life.

For example, the difference between the highly venomous Coral Snake, marked by its red, yellow, and black rings, and the non-venomous, eerily similar Erythrolampurs Aesculapii, or ‘False Coral Snake,’ marked by its red, black, and yellow rings, is one that can keep you on the trails and out of the hospital.

You planned this hiking trip, but all of sudden you have to cancel due to rain, snow, ice whatever weather mother nature throws at you. You are disappointed to miss your hiking trip, but decide to try online bingo.

Online bingo can be a fun way to pass time and win a few dollars while you’re at it. While the game involves some luck, there are some things you can do to increase your chances of winning. Follow these tips and strategies to help make your online bingo gaming a success.

Choose Games with Fewer Players

The fewer players you compete against in any given game, the better chance you will have of winning. If you have the option of which room to choose when you begin your game, choose the ones with the fewest number of players.

Get as Many Cards Possible

The more cards you can play in a single round of online bingo, the better chance you will have of winning. Do not, however, pick so many cards that you cannot keep track of them. This could cause you to miss a winning call.

Take a Break on Losing Streaks

If you’re experiencing a losing streak that doesn’t seem to end, take a few hours or a couple days away from the game. Once you feel refreshed, come back to it and try your luck and skills once again.

Schedule Your Games Strategically

The largest jackpots are typically available during the evening hours on the weekends. If you can schedule your online bingo sessions on Friday and Saturday nights, you have a better chance of winning more money. On the other hand, weeknights offer a better chance of winning because there are fewer players online. The only disadvantage is that the jackpots are generally smaller because of the lower number of players.

Forget about Superstitions

Superstitions will only get you into a rut. Don’t choose cards just because they have certain “lucky’ numbers.” Instead, choose them randomly for your best shot at winning.

Most animals love being outdoors – especially dogs. That’s why it is important to bring your dog outside whenever possible. Let Rover run around, catch the frisbee, play in the water, chase birds and squirrels, and let him get the workout that he needs. But you don’t have to stay at the park with him. You can take him into the woods on your next hike too.

But there are a few important things to consider when hiking with your dog. Since not all dogs are created equal, you want to make sure your dog gets along with other dogs. Especially if you pick a trail that is populated with a lot of other hikers and their dogs, a canine tiff is never fun to get into or break up, so do your best to make sure your dog is obedient and behaved when out on the trails.

Also, despite the temptation – even if you are absolutely sure you have the trails to yourself – keep your dog on a leash. A mountain biker could whizz by or a wandering animal might be lolling in the woods, and your dog could get into a collision with the mountain biker, or run off into the woods following only his animal instincts.

You should also bring some plastic bags to pick up after your dog. The temptation might be strong – you’re in the woods, and animals go to the bathroom in the woods – but just like you’re in the city, pick up after your dog. It’s cleaner, it’s more sanitary, and it smells better. And it’s considerate to other hikers.

Finally, consideration is key. Not all trails are open to people with dogs, so don’t think that you and Rover can be the one exception. No dogs means no dogs. Respect the rules.

But what if there are no trails? Then what do you do? Make your own.

Of course, as with anything, there are certain parameters that must be followed when blazing your own trails, and if you really want to get involved with this hand-dirtying job, it’s always best to consult your local park district first. Parks are usually maintained by a paid team of workers who often have backgrounds in forestry, geology, and other earth sciences. They know how nature works and what works best in nature. If you don’t know what you’re doing when you cut a trail, you could be stirring a brewing recipe for erosion, cut through poisonous species of plants or even happen upon a buried gas or electric line without knowing it.

So, first thing’s first – consult the park district. Often times they will be looking for volunteers to help cut and establish new trails, and if you want to be involved in your community, there is no better and more fulfilling way to do it than to know that your handiwork is what went in to creating these trail systems.

But let’s say you’re a landowner yourself. First thing you will need to do is chart a path, which involves surveying and staking out where the path is to go. You may need a machete or small chainsaw for this preliminary charting session. After you’ve selected your trail, you will also want to investigate what plants you may be cutting through. You don’t want to cut through a patch of poison oak and inhale the dust from the saw. Once you cut all of the trees and plants (which shouldn’t be done too liberally), you’ll need to upturn some of the earth and lay down mulch or gravel to at least hold off the weeds and plants for a while.

Trail blazing is a lot of work, and requires a lot of continual upkeep, and trails keep people on the path and lessen the human footprint in the forest.

When it comes to hiking, there are those who hike, and those who really hike. That’s not to say that the weekend walker is any less creditable than the dedicated hiker, but rather, that there is a certain level of pretense that accompanies the sporting philosophies of those more dedicated to the sport of hiking. It’s like this with all types of sport, though with hiking, it is easier (and more affordable) to access that pretense. And once you get there, all that pretense isn’t such a bad thing.

Anyone who takes hiking seriously has gone all the way with it and tried their hand at backpacking. The first thing you need for backpacking is an extensive trail system, like that found in the Rockies, the Pacific Crest, or even the Appalachians. If you’re going to be walking for a few days, or even a few months, you need miles of uninhibited and unblocked trails, which means that some places are better for backpacking than others.

Secondly, you’ll need a good backpack relative to the things you want to be carrying. If you’re going to be backpacking the 21st century way (which is frowned upon by most of the dedicated backpackers), you’ll need room for your laptop, rechargeable batteries, water treatment kits, global positioning systems, snake bite kits, and everything else convenient. However, if you do it the good old fashioned way, you’ll need a compass, a map, a box of matches, a few cooking utensils, a knife, and maybe some toilet paper and body powder.

Hiking, and especially backpacking, can reconnect your body and your mind to your human roots. It can be an ecstatic experience to leave the technological world behind, if only for a short time, and enjoy nature as it was meant to be enjoyed: by being a part of it, not apart from it.

That is, before the true influence of agriculture in America, the country was wooded from coast to coast. Of course, this is a grossly simple oversight. Native Americans were tilling parts of the land before Europe arrived, though it certainly wasn’t as aggressive of a farming style as was the Europeans.

Nonetheless, America’s plains were maintained by the large herds of bison and other grazing creatures, and today they still stand as a testament to North America’s diverse animal history. The bison were slaughtered and most of the animals are gone, but the plains and prairies remain. And for hikers who are tired of the popularity of the woods and the attention those draw, prairie hiking is just as fun and exploratory of a way to experience America’s still ranging diversity of flora and fauna.

On the prairie there are insects and different kinds of birds and mammals that you wouldn’t otherwise see in the forest, and the range of grasses and flowers across the prairie is extensive. As you stand and look across the horizon of the prairie, it’s a different sort of feeling that you might experience simply looking through a screen of trees in the forest. You realize how truly large the land is.

One of the problems being in the plains, however, is the intensity of the sun and weather. If you’re out in the plains in the summer, bring extra water and sunscreen to shield you from the unforgiving rays and exposure to the sun itself. And if you’re in the plains during a storm, seek cover quickly, since lightning strikes have a potential to seek out the tallest object around. Other than that, enjoy the plains – a geography unique to America.

Venturing off the trail can lead to a complicated set of problems that affect not only the hiker, but also the system hiked in to. There are, however, times when doing hiking off the beaten path is the hiker’s whole intention. Of course, this shouldn’t be attempted by everyone, but for the hiker looking for a new challenge, ‘rogaining’ is a perfect solution.

Rogaining is a hiking trip directed by direction and orientation. You face yourself in a certain direction, and utilizing systems of maps, compasses, and perhaps even global-positioning systems, you set out across a given country or land plot to your ultimate destination. Some people will have certain landmarks they wish to find on their rogaining trip, and orient themselves that way.

Rogaining gets its name from the first names of the principle men and women who invented the sport, Rod Phillips, Gail Davis and Neil Phillips, an Australian ‘rover’ crew who set out to explore their country in a 24-hour cross-country excursion. ROGAINE can also mean ‘Rugged Outdoor Group Activity Involving Navigation and Endurance,’ and either use is correct.

The sport as a whole involves a lot of endurance, agility, speed, and know-how for navigating the complexities of any country’s geography and geology. You may happen upon a river, a canyon, a gorge, or an impasse, and know how to navigate those obstacles quickly, without losing track of your eventual destination. The sport is a good way to learn the countryside and implement endurance and survival skills. And if you’re good enough, you can join the annual Rogaine championships, usually held in Australia or New Zealand.

But the true attraction to the sport is its versatility. Pick your own checkpoints, make your own competition. Have fun.

Trail running. It’s a clever idea, and when you think about it, it’s probably no younger than when humans first started to walk on two legs. There were no roads then, only trails, and when you needed to get somewhere fast (or perhaps outrun a hungry aggressor), you picked up your pace.

These days, as the face of the earth is slowly turning in to a big parking lot, when it comes to footsports, jogging is king. Marathons, half-marathons, speed-walking, mall-walking, and everything else – all of these utilize one thing strangely absent in nature: pavement. Who says you have to stick to the roads if you want a workout?

That’s why trail running is so appealing. It gets you off the streets and into the woods, where you can reconnect with nature and see all of the sights and sounds endemic to a wooded sojourn. Plus, if you’re moving at an accelerated pace, depending on the difficulty of the trail, you will not only be attaining and maintaining those workout BPMs, but you will be improving your physical coordination and strength as well.

Unlike other trail-based sports, like mountain biking, you don’t need a ton of equipment either. You might even be able to forego the necessity of mosquito repellent like some of the simple hikers, since you’ll be moving quickly and washing away the insects in your wake. You just need a pair of heavier-duty shoes, since standard jogging shoes might not hold up as well on rougher trails, a pair of shorts or light pants, some sweat-wicking materials, and off you go.

With enough experience, and if you find yourself truly enjoying the sport, you can maybe join up and do off-road marathons or half-marathons. While competitions like these might be more tiring and aggressive, you get out what you put into it, as they say, and for this reason, the rewards are immeasurable. Your body will thank you.
