Web design is a fast growing business and has become a useful skill for those interested in this career. Some individuals fall into web design, as their companies start a website and need an employee to assist with the process. Whether someone is a professional web designer or a novice looking for experience, this can be a fun way to experiment with different approaches and options.

Typically some type of web design software will be necessary in order to create a professional looking site. Some programs offer free trials for 30 days or more, so that potential customers can try out the features. It’s also smart to assess the needs of the business before undergoing a big project, because websites that offer sales are much more complex than those without. Security and encryption must be more advanced, and there has to be a way for customers to pay. For complicated websites, it will usually pay off to use the services of a professional web designer. Learning internet codes such as HTML, FTP, and PHP can be confusing.

For those who want to become more advanced in the world of web design, there are plenty of courses offered at colleges and universities. There are also forums and other means of communication from fellow web designers available online. It is often more helpful to read the experience of a person who has encountered a similar problem, because these people can provide guidance.

Designers can browse popular websites to get a feel for their likes and dislikes, and what they feel works well on a site. This will help ensure that the final result will be visually appealing.

A great way to stay in shape is to take up the hobby of hiking. Hiking can be a very enjoyable and relaxing activity, but it will also help you to stay in shape. Hiking in the great outdoors allows you to get some fresh air and to see wildlife in its natural environment.

Finding great places to hike isn’t very difficult. Most government parks include hiking trails. You can also check various websites that list hiking trails in your area. Take advantage of resources such as canada 411 to find hiking opportunities close to where you live.

You will want to make sure that the trails you choose are at or below your skill level. Some trails are designed for more experienced hikers and you should be aware of the skill level of a trail before you begin your hike.

Choosing the right trails is important, particularly if you are a little out of shape and need easier trails with little rough terrain and virtually no significant elevation. Once these trails become easier for you, it’s time to move to the more advanced option. Some of the more difficult trails may include hiking through forests, hills or even mountains.

The point of hiking is simple – to get or stay active, enjoy the great outdoors, and have fun. This is a family activity that even your children will enjoy. Use it as a learning tool to become educated about plants and animals and identify different types and species. The possibilities for fun while hiking are endless.

For those who have become bored with kayaking on rivers and small lakes, take heart, there is another way to enjoy kayaking – sea kayaking. Sea (or touring) kayaks are an entirely different breed paddled in a much different environment. Sea kayaks are built for sailing on open waters – large lakes, bays and oceans.

By design, sea kayaks are seaworthy. They are longer and have a covered deck. Because they are essentially kayaks and meant for straight line travel without sacrificing maneuverability. These kayaks can be anywhere from 10 to 18 feet long for one person and up to 26 feet long for two or three paddlers and their supplies. These craft are built for trips of a few hours or several weeks.

Sea kayaks originated in Alaska, Canada and southern Greenland around 4,000 years ago. They were used primarily for hunting and fishing by the native populations.

Today, sea kayaks are also used for recreation in a variety of different locations and environments. In many cases, very little kayaking experience is needed. Glacier Bay, Alaska is a great example. These waters are home to whales, orcas and other wildlife

Another totally different environment for sea kayakers is North Carolina’s Outer Banks. These barrier islands along the state’s coast are home to Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge, ape Hatteras National Forest and the Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge. There are also many small coastal towns and historic sites along the Outer Banks that are worth seeing.

Down Easter Island, Maine boasts of some of the most rugged coastline on the east coast. The coastline is full of small coves and inlets that beg to be explored.

Another Alaskan sea kayaking paradise is Prince William Sound. The sound is protected from the ocean by mountains and glaciers and abounds in wildlife, including the bald eagle.

Cumberland Island, Georgia is considered to be the premier sea kayaking area on the east coast. The island is located in tidal marsh and is home to many wildlife species.

Atchafalaya Basin in Louisiana is a varied sea kayak trip that moves through bald cypress swamps, bayous and brackish water to end up coming out in the Gulf of Mexico.

Sea kayaking is definitely different and offers an interesting alternative for kayakers.

The kayak is similar to its relative the canoe in many respects. Both are used for water transportation and have a long history dating back thousands of years, The kayak differs from the canoe in that it have more top over and typically seats only one person. The kayak’s origins are also different and can be traced back primarily to Canada and Alaska.

First and foremost, anyone who is drawn to kayaking needs to be able to swim and be comfortable in and on the water. Beginners are strongly advised to learn how to navigate and paddle a kayak on calm water first. Pros suggest renting several kayaks to find out what works best before buying a kayak – it is an investment. It is worth noting that there are schools that teach novices all they need to know about safe and proper kayaking techniques. Another point worth making is that kayaking build upper body strength. As more paddling is done, upper body strength is increased and paddling becomes more effortless.

The new kayaker’s first few trips should be on still water such as a lake or calm river. It is always best to kayak with at least one other kayaker and to always wear a safety helmet and a personal floatation device (PFD). Once the kayaker becomes proficient on calm water, it is time to advance to new and more challenging kayaking environments like whitewater kayaking.

Where to kayak? Almost any facility or body of water that accommodates a canoe works for a kayak. There are recommended waters to paddle on in every state. There are also organizations that conduct guided group kayaking trips. These are great venues for learning to navigate whitewater.

One of the most recognized kayaking facilities in the United States is the U.S. National Whitewater Center near Charlotte, North Carolina. The facility was opened in 2006 and is home to the U.S. National Kayaking Team. It is considered to be one of the premier outdoor recreation centers. The center is particularly noteworthy because the whitewater is manmade from the nearby Catawba River.

As the weather starts to get warmer, mountain bikers begin to turn their attention to getting ready for a spring and summer of biking enjoyment. For others who have never tried the sport, it is a good time to start learning what mountain biking is all about.

Most mountain bike riders will say that they ride to stay fit because it is a great form of aerobic exercise. In the next breath they will say that it’s also about the challenge of completing a rugged trail. They enjoy the variety of trails – long and short, easy and challenging.

Like any other sport there are rules. This is especially true for the beginner. Experts advise novices that the first step is to take time to select the right bike. While many bikes are lightweight and allow more speed, most bike riders recommend a full suspension mountain bike because it is more comfortable and has better control in rugged terrain.

The next step is to prepare and assemble the gear needed for a ride. The key to preparing is to think “self-sufficient.” That means to carry what is needed – plenty of water, the tools and supplies needed to maintain the bike, food and to always wear a helmet.

Where do mountain bikers ride? One of the favorite riding areas is the national parks and forests located throughout the United States. Most of the same trails that are used by hikers can be ridden on a mountain bike and there is usually a park or forest near any town or city in the states.

There are also private mountain bike riding trails in many areas of the country. Here are some of the recommended beginner to intermediate mountain bikes riding trails for new riders:

When most people think of skiing, they think of downhill skiing and slalom. It may come as a surprise that downhill skiing has an equally popular cousin – cross country skiing. Cross country skiing has been a means of transportation in northern Europe and Asia for 5,000 years and has built an avid following as an exercise and sports activity.

In the United States there are several hundred cross country ski trails throughout the states, particularly in New England, the western states, and the northwestern Pacific coast. Cross country skiing venues can be divided into two camps, so to speak. Experts will be quick to note that many of the national parks and forests have systems of ski trails for experienced skiers. They point out that the trails are extensive and less expensive to use. Accommodations can usually found in nearby town at much less expensive rates, too.

For beginning cross country skiers, ski resorts are probably a safer place to start. Most downhill ski resorts also have cross country ski trails. While resorts tend to be more expensive, the trails are clearly marked and kept in good condition. There are also instructors available for the first time cross country skier. Many of the resorts have warming huts along the ski trails.

Some of the resorts are interesting and unique. Adirondacks, New York was the home to the 1932 and 1980 Winter Olympic Games at Lake Placid and boasts of six million acres of ski trails and an Olympic Sports Center. Further north in Stowe, Vermont, the famous Von Trapp family established the Von Trapp Family Lodge, a cross country ski center, after fleeing Austria during World War II.

At Mount Bachelor Ski Resort in Oregon, cross country skiers can ski in June – and get a tan. The resort is also the training center for the U.S. Cross-country Ski and Biathlon Teams in the spring.

Royal Gorge in Soda Springs, California sits in the Sierra Nevada Mountains and claims to have the largest cross country ski resort. Tenth Mountain Division in Colorado is names after the first Army unit in World War II to be trained to fight on skis. The facility has an impressive 270 miles of ski trail and 29 warming huts.

Snow skiing is an international winter sport. It is also one of the most watched events at every winter World Olympics. Not surprisingly, skiing was a means of transportation long before it became a popular sport and competition event.

“Ski” is a derivation of the original translation and means “stick of wood.” Skis are believed to have evolved from snowshoes and were used extensively in northern Europe and Asia as long as 5,000 years ago. The first evidence of skis as bones from large animals was found in Norway and Switzerland, and the oldest recorded ski dating back to 3200 BC was discovered in Sweden in 1924. Evidence of skis being used during this period has also been found in the Sayan Mountains of Asia.

There were originally three different types of skis that were used primarily for cross-country travel. The Fennoscandian ski has a horizontal toe-piece binding that was often covered with fur. This ski was the forerunner to the Telemark ski. The second design, the eastern Siberian ski, was a thin board that had a vertical four-hole binding. There were also two different types of ski pole. The first was a walking stick that was used for balance. The second type of pole was made from a spear or a bow and had some degree of flexibility. When two of these poles were used, the skier was able to travel at higher speed.

Sondre Norheim of Telemark, Norway is regarded as the father of modern skiing – at least in Norway. He is credited with inventing the “birch” binding that allowed skiers to ski without the risk of loosing their skis. In 1870 Norheim is believed to have designed a short curved flexible ski that made it easier to turn in soft snow. However, there is little evidence to support the claims of Norheim’s inventions because most of them were already in existence.

Ski-jumping and cross-country skiing became official events at the 1932 Olympics at Lake Placid, NY and in 1936, downhill and combined slalom skiing were add as events at the Olympics held in Germany.

One of the world’s favorite water adventure activities is scuba diving. Divers have many different reasons for spending time underwater. Many of them are sightseers and photographers; others are searching for ship ruins and artifacts. They are all part of a pastime and profession that has been around for centuries.

Underwater diving originated in societies where fishing was a main source of food. Divers trained to hold their breath for long periods would go under the water to catch fish or harvest shellfish from the bottom. Recognizing that the longer divers could stay underwater, the more food they could catch, ingenuity took over and new ideas were born.

The reed was the first snorkel. However, while divers could stay under longer, they could only go a few feet below the surface. Diving bells made of wood were used as early as 1600. The bells allowed divers to submerge for longer periods and get air trapped at the top of the bell by going under and up into the bell.

The first diving suits made of leather were designed in the early 1800s, allowing a diver to go down to 60 feet. During the same period, diving helmets were designed that allowed air to be pumped into the helmet from the surface. A solution that would allow divers to work independent of air supplied from the surface still persisted.

In 1825 the first truly self contained diving system was invented. The compressed air supply was contained in a belt worn by the diver and allowed him to stay under water unfettered for longer periods.

The final solution for a system that would allow divers to dive using a self-contained and regulated air supply was invented in 1942 by world famous water naturalist Jacque Cousteau and Emile Gagnan. The “aqua lung” allowed divers to go deeper and stay longer. During World War II, the aqua lung acquired the military acronym SCUBA for “self contained underwater breathing apparatus.” The acronym stuck and scuba diving began growing into the popular activity it is today during the 1950s.

Mountain climbing can be a fun and challenging activity; it can also be dangerous. There are rules for climbing mountains that make it safer and more enjoyable.

Choosing the proper clothing beforehand is an important first rule. At higher altitudes the air is colder and weather needs to be considered. Thick wool socks should be worn with boots designed for climbing. Trousers, preferably climbing breeches, should be loose fitting and comfortable. Top garments should be warm and designed to protect against wind and rain. Many climbers prefer neoprene-proof anorak for protection in rain. Trousers made from the same material will shield from run-off from the top garment. Light weight thermal gloves offer good protection for the hands. A safety helmet should always be worn when climbing.

The next rule is to plan the climb well in advance of the date. Planning includes getting and becoming familiar with maps of the area, keeping close track of expected weather conditions, and planning the route to be taken. Make sure a copy of the planned itinerary is left with a responsible person. If the weather becomes unsafe, it is best to cancel the climb – better safe than sorry.

Safety is a prime consideration in mountain climbing. Before starting to climb, double check to make sure that maps, a flashlight and a compass will be handy at all times. The one piece of technology that should be carried is a fully charged cell phone. Be sure to stay on the planned route – do not wander off into unfamiliar areas. Bring plenty of fluids and drink periodically to stay hydrated. Travel at a moderate pace. Even walk-up mountain climbing can be exhausting. Stay alert for unexpected hazards along the route.

Always be considerate of the environment and others who climb mountains. Whatever is brought onto a mountain should be taken back down. “Whatever” includes trash, empty containers and anything else that is not part of the natural habitat?

Finally, have a safe and enjoyable climb.

The question many beginner mountain climbing enthusiasts ask is what are the best U.S, mountains to climb? The first part of the answer to that question is the level of difficulty involved in climbing a particular U.S. peak.

The level of difficulty involves a mix of two factors: altitude and terrain. At the lowest level a mountain would be at a low altitude with easily climbed terrain. The reality is that a tall mountain could be a walk-up with little difficulty involved and a mountain at a much lower altitude could have much rougher terrain. Regardless of the level of difficulty, a safety minded mountaineer always climbs with a companion.

California’s Mount Whitney is the highest mountain in the lower 48 states at an altitude of 14, 494 feet and yet it is considered a walk-up climb by mountaineers. The same level of difficulty applies to Mount Elbert in Colorado with an altitude of 14,433 feet.

Located outside the continental United States is Hawaii’s Mount Haleakala, a walk-up mountain that makes up 75% of the island of Maui. The mountain was formed from a volcano over thousands of years.

There are mountains in the United States that are significantly more difficult to climb. New Hampshire’s Mount Washington peaks at an altitude of 6,288 feet and yet it is a difficult climb because of the weather conditions. The highest recorded wind gust on a U.S mountaintop – 231 miles per hour – was measured on Mount Washington. During the winter, sustained temperatures of -40 degrees Fahrenheit have been recorded on this mountain and the wind chill has been estimated at -100 degrees Fahrenheit.

Another low altitude mountain that merits difficulty respect is Maine’s Mount Katadhin at 5,267 feet above seal level. This mountain sits at the end of the Appalachian Trail and is known for the Knife Edge Trail, a path that is no more than two feet wide in some spots with 1,000 foot drops on either side of the path.

Mountain climbing is a sport that goes by several other names – alpinism, mountaineering and rock climbing. All these names are synonymous with a popular sports activity that requires fitness, agility, stamina, endurance and the right mental attitude. Mountaineering requires fitness and is ultimately about the challenge of climbing to the top.
Mental attitude is a key factor because mountain climbing can be dangerous. First and foremost, experienced climbers should always climb with another person. They must be constantly aware of their environment and alert to potential dangers like rock slides and poor footing.
Climbing mountains is, like many other sports, a learning process. Seasoned climbers recommend that people who are interested in the sport “aim low” and start with short climbs or at a climbing gym. A gym gives the potential beginner a sense of what mountain climbing is like. Another suggestion is to take a short course at a mountain climbing school. There are good schools around the country. Mountain climbing clubs are also a good place to learn about and try the sport out.
For those who discover that they like mountaineering, the next level is to try “walk-up” mountains. These are non-technical climbs that require no special equipment and will test climbers’ endurance and confidence start with low elevation climbs and working up to higher climbs. In the United States, two of the better known high walk-ups are California’s Mount Whitney (14,490 feet) and Colorado’s Mount Elbert (14,433 feet).
The next step climbs are moderately steep snow capped mountains like Washington’s Mount Rainer (14,411 feet) and Mount Baker (10,770 feet), and California’s Mount McKinley (20,320 feet). The height of these mountains is deceptive in comparison to the walk-up mountains because these climbs require more skill, experience and the use of specialized equipment to reach the peak.
Mountain climbing is great exercise and an opportunity to go enjoy the outdoors in an entirely different way. With time, determination and experience a beginning climber can become an experienced mountaineer

The Cascade Range in Washington is not only breathtakingly beautiful, it is home to many of the region’s best hiking spots. The Alpine Lakes Wilderness is a nature area located within the Cascade Range. It also has many hiking areas within its woods and the mountains located within its boundaries.

Alpine Lakes Wilderness has a lot of forested area in it that provides paths and hiking trails. The Wenatchee National Forest is located here, as is the Snoqualmie National Forest. It is such a great hiking area because it is a very rugged area. There are lots of peaks, valleys, and other topographic variations that make for a challenging and exciting hiking area.

There are five mountainous areas in Alpine Lakes Wilderness that are excellent for hiking. Mount Daniel is one of the biggest challenges, and therefore a big goal for many hikers. It is almost 8,000 feet tall and it is known for being the highest point in the Kittitas County. However, it isn’t the highest point in Alpine Lakes Wilderness! Mount Stuart is almost 9,500 feet and it is the tallest mountain in the entire wilderness area.

The Stuart Range of mountains is also located here. It has over 10 scalable peaks for hikers and climbers. It also encompasses the Enchantment Lakes, which provide a rest spot for weary hikers. The Stuart Range runs parallel to the Wenatchee Mountains. The Wenatchee Mountain range has dozens of mountain peaks that range in difficulty level from easy to very difficult.

Also located within the Alpine Lakes Wilderness area is the Chiwaukum Mountain range. It is considerably smaller than the other ranges in the area. However, it still has three peaks for explorers to try.

The Alpine Lakes Wilderness Area is clearly an exciting hiking area for hikers of all skill levels.

Just because your life is very routine, doesn’t mean that your vacations have to be. When you are planning a trip the key is to make it memorable above all else. The relaxing is nice, but you can do that on the weekends. What you need is something different than your day to day. Seeing parts of the world that you have never seen before is a great way to not only enjoy your vacation, but change your perspective and be a different person when you return. So make the plans now and see the world in different ways.

Maybe the best way to see the world is through a mammoth trip to Europe. There are few things more rewarding than getting a backpack and taking it through the lands of Europe. With so many countries interconnected, and transportation making the commute easy, there is a reason to go. The best part is that Europe, even in a changing economic climate, can be done on a tight budget. If you have the resources then, by all means, you should take time off and go.

If you are not a native to the United States, and have never stayed in places like fine Denver apartments, or the wonderful city of Orlando then you should visit. If you are going to come just once, then head over to Las Vegas. It is not your typical city, and there is nothing in the country that even comes close to it. It is the definition of excess and over-the-top behavior. It’s a great way to see the United States at its most glamorous and absurd.

If going to another country isn’t something that you can do, then try going somewhere that offers adventure. A vacation should be about experiences. Make sure that your next vacation is wonderfully memorable and delightfully different.

Namibia is found on the south western side of the African continent. Although always in the news for the wrong reasons, Namibia is a very good choice of a hiking destination. It tends to get lost between all the other countries of Africa. The best way to explore Namibia is by foot. And that is why multiple hiking tours are popular here.

Fish river is a long river that runs the length of Namibia. The hiking trip is 80 km long and lasts for 5 to 6 days depending on your speed and your breaks. It is recommended that you avoid hiking during months of excessive heat and only the months of April and September are optimum when the rains are often. The fish trail is the 2nd largest canyon on earth. It is a protected area. The flora is unique to this part of the world and many resorts can be found here. Another very popular hiking destination is the skeleton coast part hike. The whole area cream in color and the landscape is untouched. The area receives natural breeze from the ocean which keeps the area cold and manageable.

The whole area is a work of natural art with volcanic rocks and rugged canyons along with sand dunes which create a picture which cannot be defined but only experienced. Hiking along the coastline will reveal the carnages of many ships which have been the victim of war and the wrath of pacific. The park is huge and the hiking trip needs to be well planned so that every member of your team can manage to finish it on his own. The flora is non-existent except for rare desert vegetation. There are many other hiking destinations in Namibia for which tours are provided and always have something different to offer.

It’s an assumption of concrete, the endless towers of glass and steel. A city is believed to be without intrigue — its attractions all soaked to strangers and their demands. There can be no adventures within the stone borders. There can be no thrills. It’s just another dull collection of buildings and sterile beauty. You can’t find the excitement you need there. You can’t even find the joy.

All San Diego property management is thought to be an exercise in profits. Each mile must be devoted to nothing beyond high-rises and higher budgets. This holds no fascination for you, though — not when you’re seeking to explore the true meanings of a vacation.

But there is more to this city than its easy efficiency and you will discover instead a wealth of natural wonders: each certain to impress.

Consider touring the Torrey Pines State Reserve, with its cliff-side paths and ocean views (sure to inspire). Search for gray whales and their migrations among the Point Loma coast. Explore the Cleveland National Forest and its 460,000 acres — a staggering network of trails, trees and wildlife. Hike along the miles of Razor Point to indulge in vistas and Pacific scenery. And even scale craggy walls within the Rose Canyon Hiking Park. The possibilities are endless.

The notion that San Diego is a standard city is too often believed (and too often accepted). It is instead a diverse tangle of the typical amusements and the unexpected treats. Its outdoor excursions rival any throughout the world — and you will experience nature as you never thought possible.

It’s the trip of a lifetime. It’s the chance that must be taken.

You’re craving more than stone and sleek architecture. You want days instead that are laced with good intentions. Now you can have them.

San Diego is a delight that shouldn’t be denied. Prepare for the uncommon and the unforgettable.

Zimbabwe is one of the lesser known hiking destinations in Africa. It is popular for the traditional lions, giraffes, zebras and other animals. But there are many hiking destination is Zimbabwe that are a pleasure to hike. Though the routes are not mapped, it is still an adventure to find your own routes in the jungles of Zimbabwe. There are many national parks which are protected under the Zimbabwe government.

Zimbabwe is a land locked country. It is a extremely scenic place with multiple attractions. Many ruins which are not been classified can be found by hiking. There are many lakes which are surrounded by pristine wildlife like zebras, buffaloes and the water itself has crocodiles. This place is only about the outdoors. The most popular national parks here are the Hwange National park and the Matbo National Park. The non-Hikers in your group can also enjoy bungee jumping, hot air balloon rides, fishing, horse back riding and white water rafting. There are many golf courses that extend more than your average 18 hoe golf courses. The Matusadona national park has a combination of landscape that ranges from tropical forests to open grasslands where you can observe animals in their natural environment. Birds here also attract tourists from all over the world. The large Lake Kariba is located inside this national park and cannot be missed at any cost when on a hiking trip to Zimbabwe. Be careful of the 1000 or more buffalo here which can suddenly start trampling.

Hunting is strictly prohibited here. Hunting attracts a life sentence or a hefty fine. Drinking water should be carried along or purified before drinking. Mosquitoes are abundant here for which a nice mosquito repellent needs to be used. Tours are few but many resorts along the borders of the national parks offer hiking trips.

Hiking is a wonderful experience and can be done in a variety of ways. It is a sport that can be enjoyed alone, with friends, or a whole family can enjoy the time together. It is even something you might enjoy with your dog. You will not only be able to enjoy some great exercise, but will be viewing some beautiful scenery along the way.

Hiking is a way to get away from all the stress that the world sometimes hands you. It offers so many health benefits, including controlling body weight and providing a good cardio workout. This will help to deal with controlling the blood pressure.

Taking the dog along is a great idea if you are scared to hike alone. It will give you a companion and may also prevent other animals you may encounter from an attack. Just be sure to wear your Chopard jewelry and bring your camera along. This will help you to be able to share your experience through pictures with your family and friends. An even better way to share the experience is to have them come along with you. This will give everyone the chance for bonding time.

Hiking gives a person’s body the benefit of getting a great workout. A body longs for one and it will be satisfied by hiking. Every muscle in your body will be challenged by taking a hike.

You might think once the first hiking trip is over you’ll never want to take another one again. You will want to push that out of your mind and move on after your aching muscles set in. If you move forward and continue your body will adjust to it. You will be much healthier and happier that you moved on and did what is best for you.

Egypt is one of the most fascinating historical countries of the world. People from all over the world come to Egypt just to see the most fascinating and historical civilization in the world which is still present. Apart from the breath taking architectural marvels such as the pyramids of Giza and the numerous buildings, Egypt is also a extremely good hiking destination. It is considered to have the best hiking route in all of the Middle East.

Egypt has a lot of places where a tourist can go see and experience hiking. Because of this multitude of options, hiking comes at the bottom of the to do list in the Egypt tour. But it is recommended that you also experience Egypt on foot and see what people since ages have been going through. It’s a great historical as well as emotional experience to see places which are part of history and have seen thousands of people pass by them. One such hiking destination is the Mount Sinai. Mount Sinai is considered a very sacred place for Christians, Muslims and Jews. This is the mountain where Moses received the Ten Commandments on two stone tablets.

This place is 100km from the red sea. This place is visited by a heard of visitors throughout the year. Reaching the mountain is quite easy and finding a guide who can give you the complete picture of the place before Christ. The trek is only a few hours long but the knowledge and the experience gained last for a lifetime. Even if you tire half way while hiking, you can always find camels for rent easily on your route. It is more beautiful at night than in the day with the entire route candle lit by the breed of pilgrims. The mountain invited a very harsh cold, hence it is advised to avoid hiking during winter.

The Wasatch Range is a mountain range spanning 160 miles from the Utah-Idaho border to central Utah. It is located in some of the most pristine and beautiful country in America and also boasts to be one of the most accessible mountain ranges. The range is home to 11 ski resorts and claims to be home to some of the most frequently used canyon roads in the United States. The Wasatch boasts countless marked and unmarked trailheads, ranging from easy hikes to strenuous mountain climbs.

The most frequented canyons in the Wasatch are Little and Big Cottonwood Canyons. Only a half hour from the Salt Lake International Airport, Little and Big Cottonwood Canyons are home to some of the most famous ski resorts in the world. Alta was rated the best skier’s mountain by “Ski” magazine and holds the distinction of being one of only three ski resorts that only cater to skiers. The other standout resort is Snowbird. Along with Alta, it was rated the number one North American ski resort by “Skier” magazine.

While the winter beauty and notoriety of the canyons cannot be surpassed, many people flock to the Wasatch canyons in the summertime for the epic hiking and other summer mountain sports. On any given warm summer day, you will see people riding triathlon bikes, trudging up 45-degree angle roads, and rock climbers. When attempting either of these sports, you should make sure you are prepared. Have the proper equipment and use a guide when necessary.

With a locals-only cave that is known to run over 3,000 feet deep, make sure you have a guide and don’t try caving alone. Regardless of what sport you choose to do or the season you go, the Wasatch Range offers a multitude of outdoor recreation second to none.

Like all African countries Botswana is overlooked as a hiking destination. It is quite popular as a destination for jeep safaris. But what people do not realize is that the hiking experience can be doubled by including wildlife in it. It can be termed as hiking safari.

Botswana is a landlocked country and has many game reserves and national forests that are home to the best mammals in Africa. Although there is no dearth of companies offering safari tours in Botswana to its game reserves, there are only a few tour operators who offer hiking tours to the heart of Botswanian jungles. When opting for a wildlife hiking expedition you can sign in to one of the resorts or lodges located on the outskirts of the game reserves. These resorts and lodges are completely different form the ones found elsewhere around the world and give users a unique taste of African hospitality. The top end resorts come with 24 hours on call room service dedicated to get you anything you want.

The best hiking destinations in Botswana are found in the Chobe River basin and the Okavango Delta. You can also indulge in some water activities while you are here. Tourists can also come across some indigenous people who live the life of nomads and are a pure delight meet. Another great destination for a safari would be the Selinda Walking Safari where an area is specifically set aside for hiking. You go through open plains and grass lands and through riparian forests that offer a stark contrast and a good idea about the African continent.

You can also opt for biking or horse riding hiking if you cannot manage the whole journey on foot. It is a great science expedition to go through a completely remote destination which has so much to offer.

Uganda is a place popular around the world for its wildlife and safaris. For hikers it is a destination where they can enjoy the beautiful scenery along with the splendid wild life. There are many mountainous regions here which are popular with trekkers, hikers and adventure sport enthusiast.

The Rwenzoris Mountains are the best place to hike in. The mountain tops are covers with snow and give a huge respite from the Ugandan heat. These are known as mountains of the moon because of the snowcapped tops. These mountains run along the border of the Republic of Congo. This is a very good destination for mountain hikers with high stamina. The mountains are 1500 mts in height and offer a great way to hike and climb them. Mount Elgon in the eastern side of Uganda is another great destination to get your experience of Hiking. Hikers with mediocre stamina can easily take part in hiking this mountain. The mountain itself is a highly fertile old volcano that is covered with forests around the sides. These forests make for an interesting climb and you will pass through some of Uganda’s most beautiful destinations.

For hiking in Uganda it is important that you hire a tour guide who is experienced in handling wild animals who can get extremely aggressive. Apart from that you should know to read signs, no animal will attack you unless you venture into its territory. Hence you have to learn to be safe and practice precaution. Many safaris and tour operators offer hiking trips with experiences guides with weapons. These guides are experienced in handling with wild animals and also small reptile and insects. You can also see the famed and almost extinct gorillas here. It only depends on the knowledge of the guide or pure chance that you will see them.

More than 2 thirds of New Zealand is a national park or a reserve or some kind of protected area. For a person deciding on going for a hike in New Zealand, the choice of a destination to choose for hiking is very tough. Many of the parks are world heritage sites and are hotspots for flora and fauna. With animals that are not found anywhere in the world it is important to protect these valuable natural assets. Hence the government has set up these national parks and has prohibited hunting of any kind. There is total 14 national parks that are located around new Zealand. These parks have an interesting diversity of landscapes and climate.

Te Urewera National Park is the largest of all the national parks and has some of the most beautiful locations in New Zealand.

The Tongariro National Park has an interesting mixture of lakes and desserts that make the hiking more adventurous. With dense forest in the initial stages of your hike and deserts afterward, the park is a delight to hike. And it also has some very beautiful volcanoes that attract Hikers from around the world. The Whanganui National Park is crisscrossed by the Whanganui River. This river is a popular spot for water sports such as canoeing and fishing. Egmont National Park has the majestic Mount Egmont as its central attraction and hikers with good climbing skills find it a great hiking destination. The Abel Tasman National Park is located next to pristine beaches and the vast sea. It is a great experience to follow the coastal tracks. Kahurangi National Park has the most vibrant wildlife at the highest location in New Zealand. The Nelson Lakes National Park is surrounded by a lush green forest filled with beech trees and mountains with breathtaking views.

Regulations regarding taking pets into foreign countries differ from region to region, so you will need to research the particular country you will be visiting to determine what is required. However, if the area you are visiting as part of your hiking vacation participates in the Pet Travel Scheme (PETS), this article can provide information on that.

Some of the countries that do participate in PETS are the United Kingdom and Canada. If you are visiting these countries, here’s a little bit about what you need to know. This is not all-inclusive, however, so you may need to do some additional research.

You must first meet certain regulations, such as making sure your pet is current on rabies and other vaccinations. In addition, you must be able to verify that your pet has not been out of either a listed or non-listed PETS participating country within six months prior to traveling to another country.

Once you have met the initial requirements, because they participate in PETS, the United Kingdom and Canada do not require quarantine for your pet to enter the country. In those countries that do not participate in PETS, quarantine periods can be as long as six weeks.

Further, the United Kingdom and Canada do not limit the pets allowed to enter the country to just cats and dogs. Ferrets are also allowed to enter under the PETS policy. Not only that, but pets that were brought into the United Kingdom can be taken to other European Union countries by their owners, and will be allowed to enter the UK again.

In order to make sure that you can meet and stay up to date on all these requirements, consider obtaining pet insurance. This way, if your pet should require treatments for an illness or need updated vaccines, you would have the financial means to do so.

Boating is a leisurely activity for many, but due to the cost involved and lack of time one has to spare, it has became an activity only a few can afford. If you enjoy boating, whether it’s with the family or to get away for a few hours to get your thoughts together, there are plenty of options available for you. Throughout the country and most likely close to your home, there are several lakes and rivers you can make use of. Most of these locations are low cost and you can get a seasonal pass.

Once you have been involved in boating, you are sure to love it and soon you find yourself saving up to get your own boat. With the amount of research and money that goes into acquiring a boat, it is only natural to find the best insurance out there to give you that peace of mind. There are several insurance companies, including 21st Century Insurance, who can not only provide you with insurance for your trailer but also for you boat. You can call up or go online to get a quote that best suits your budget and before you know it you will be on the water, experiencing what many people love.

With insurance, you are free to take your boat out without a headache and enjoy your favorite activity. Going out fishing with your family and friends is just one of the many things you will grow to love. Be smart and get the right insurance since you don’t want your hard earned money to go to waste in case of an unfortunate event. Boating will bring about the relaxation you need after a week of hard work and you don’t even have to plan a long and expensive vacation. You will instantly feel the freedom that comes with the joy of boating.

Never wondering and simply going on your trip is great, if living in the moment is your general style. However, for many people there is more to it than that. There are many logistical concerns that any reasonable person will bring to the table on occasions when they are set to go on a trip. Among them is will you be able to afford it? If you don’t have enough money to pay the bills you already have, you don’t have any business going on trips in the first place. But once that issue is settled, you also have a few others to contend with.

For one, is your vehicle up to snuff? If you do not have a vehicle that is reliable enough to carry you from where you are to where you want to be, then you have a real problem on your hands. You might even need to check out new car prices online, and see if perhaps getting a new vehicle would be a good idea. Not that you would buy a car just for one trip, but if it won’t take you a few hundred miles, it’s probably on its last legs (or perhaps its last tires) anyway. This is not something you can just let slide.

For another, where do you actually want to go? So many people pick their vacation destination just because it’s somewhere they have heard about and considered visiting. But is it somewhere you actually want to be for awhile? If you have any reservations about going, they will cause resistance in your own mind, and your vacation as a whole will suffer for it. Overall, you need to be certain that you take enough time to really think carefully about where you want to take your trip before you go on it. There really is no hurry, when it comes to this sort of thing.

Many backpackers have polarized themselves into one of two camps: the light travelers and the heavy travelers. The lights think that the less you bring with you, and the lighter that stuff is, the better time you will have. After all, it can be a real irritation to have to lug what feels like a soldier’s ruck up a mountain. While it’s great to experience a challenge, there is a fine line between “a challenge” and “a death march.” The heavies are quite the opposite, though. Not only do they thrive on the challenge of carrying plenty of things with them, they can also live like trailside royalty on what they’ve brought.

Ski holidays inspire a similar divergence of thought. On the one hand, some people like to cross country ski for days at a time, as if they were a spy during the Second World War, escaping the Nazis across the Alps. Some other people prefer to travel as lightly as possible, and even go so far as to take one of those tents that weigh less than a pound as their only means of shelter. While this is very efficient, it can also cause them to be a little wanting for supplies. This may just be the difference between knowing that your car is a mile or two away, versus wanting to go off the trail for a couple of days and see where you can end up.

There is plenty of validity to the ideas of both camps. If you have anything on your back, you have a chance of getting some blisters. And after a couple of hours of skiing, wearing a piece of paper on your back would be an amount of weight that your muscles would certainly notice. It may just end up coming down to wanting two different kinds of experiences. You can always take another trip later.

Ah, the great outdoors, a weekend warrior’s retreat is a hiker’s paradise. Behind the bars of reality, hiking enthusiasts all dream of endless grass covered hills, woody mountains, gurgling streams, and rushing rapids. If you are such an enthusiast but are unable to fulfill your hiking dreams because of financial constraints, you can obtain title loans easily and with minimum formalities.

Hikers often seek beautiful natural environments in which to hike and typical hikers enjoy sighting rare or endangered species. Today of course getting to such places is not cheap as it was before. Another cost to factor in is the price of hiking equipment. Hiking equipment is gear or equipment that one carries on a hiking trip. Because hiking is less intensive than an activity such as overnight camping, the equipment is of necessity of a shorter term more practical nature for such a walk. However even though hikes are usually a day trip, it is wise to carry basic equipment for eventualities that may occur such as forced to stay the night, getting lost, or accidents.

According to respected hiking manuals and advisories, the ten essential items to carry on a hike are

Map

Compass

Sunglasses and sunscreen

Extra food and water

Extra clothes

Headlamp (outdoor)/flashlight

First aid kit

Lighter

Swiss army knife

As you can imagine this equipment costs money. Picture this, a number of your old school mates sitting in the pub, planned a hiking trip in the country side. It’s a good old trip which promises a lot of fun, something that you don’t want to miss out on just because you lack a few dollars. By obtaining title loans you can secure the funding for your trip and repay the loan in a short period. Quick and easy, the real benefit of course is that you will never have to give up hiking with your buddy’s ever again.

As with any form of gambling, success at sports investing requires discipline. The defining point between sports betting and sports investing is that the latter involves planning, research and strict money management. With someone who bets casually or without skill, their methods are basically “hit or miss”, so it’s no wonder their winnings are the same. Sports investing takes time and considerable mathematical skill; those with a background in statistics will make sense of the numbers much quicker than those with whom numbers don’t come easily.

The successful sports investor thoroughly researches the players and teams that will be involved in a game before placing any bets. The money management part comes in here; sports investors commonly have an established bankroll with a set amount of money in it, and all bets must come from the bankroll. By having a set amount of money to work with, the sports investor can decide what percentage of his bankroll he’s willing to risk for the chance to win a bet on a given game. This percentage of the bankroll is referred to by sports investors as a “unit”. A sports investor may establish one unit as any percentage of her bankroll, and will typically bet one unit per game.

It’s a common pitfall of beginners to bet too much per game. Professional sports investors advise to bet no more than 5 percent of your bankroll on any one game, and that less than this amount — maybe 2 or 3 percent — is the ideal amount to bet on average. It’s wise to make the size of your unit flexible; if your bankroll grows from more wins, you bet more per unit because five percent of a larger number will equal a slightly larger amount of money, and if your bankroll shrinks, you’ll bet slightly less. In this way, you’ll effectively protect yourself from suffering heavy losses.

The wide Russian landscape has numerous climate zones and a variety of wild life. Russia is only one of the few countries where hunting is not prohibited by the government. Hunting for animals such as Wolf, Black bear, Lynx, moose Red deer, musk deer, brown bear, Maral Izbur stag, Siberian roe deer, ibex, Caucasian Tur, Caucasian chamois, Marco polo argali sheep, snow sheep, wild boar and many other animals.

Trekking or hiking through the numerous mountains and forests gives you an opportunity to enjoy the adventurous landscape and enjoy the thrill of wild life hunting. It is easy to spot animals in the diversity rich wildlife. The numerous waterfalls, lush green mountains, snow covered ranges, valleys, mineral springs, glaciers and meadows everywhere welcome you with bloated breath. The population of wolfs has been rising steadily in many parts of Russia and has been causing damages to livestock and other animals. Wolfs can get a little more aggressive here than wolfs in other parts of the world but nothing to worry about when traveling in groups. Weapons for hunting can be easily rented at a low cost. The best time to hunt for wolves is in January and February when the cold is reduced. During this season the wolves are also out hunting. If you want to try your hand at a smaller game then you can indulge in some bird hunting. Birds like duck, geese, woodcock, black grouse, and many more can be found here.

Even if you do not plan to hunt, carrying a weapon with you while hiking and trekking is recommended so that any chance encounter with a bear or a wolf turns in your favor. A weapon can also give you the opportunity to get some fresh meat while on an extended hiking trip so that you can replenish your proteins.

There are several things that can ruin an otherwise great hiking trip. Bad weather, poor choice of clothing, and other such factors can turn a hiking trip into a disaster; however, there are several things you can do to make sure that your hikes are as fun and safe as possible.

If you have hiked very much you have probably either discovered the effects of wearing the wrong clothes personally or learned from watching someone else learning their lesson. When hiking make sure you wear comfortable clothes that are not so tight that they restrict your movements, but are not so loose that they get in the way and trip you. Jeans are usually a good choice for hiking. True Religion brand, on the other hand, makes jeans that are perfect for hiking paths, trails, and wilderness. Also, footwear should be suitable for the area and the weather. You obviously do not want to hike a snow-covered path in sandals. Shoes should be tough, such as hiking boots, and should have good grip. Also plan for clothing options that could help in certain environments, such as a hat if it is going to be very sunny or a jacket if it could get cold or windy.

To make sure your hike does not get interrupted you should also check the weather in advance. If the weather channel calls for rain you may want to reschedule. It might also be a good idea to get a small radio you can bring with you on the hike to check on any incoming storms. If you go hiking often, you might also want to get into the habit of packing a rain poncho in case of rain or a jacket in case of snow, depending on the areas you typically hike.

Head to one of the many sports betting sites and you’re sure to be greeted with an array of events, sports and items to bet on. There’s the ability to bet on professional sports, college sports, Olympic sports and even extreme sports. But what about the ability to bet on fishing?

These sites are always thinking of popular items that the public will want to bet on. While fishing doesn’t seem like the obvious choice for betting sites it could quickly become the new thing to bet on. To the outside world fishing is just a relaxing past time that many people use as a form of vacation or to get away from the stress of daily living. The public quickly forgets that there are events out there like fly fishing and competitive bass fishing.

It would be very easy for a sports betting site to be able to take advantage of the ability to bet on fishing by allowing betters to come in and place bets on who catches the biggest fish, who catches the first fish, etc.

Everyone is looking for a way to be able to make a quick buck or two. Sports betting sites, although illegal in many states, are quickly becoming a person’s fall back to make a decent buck or two. In their hopes of making it big by placing bets people will place bets on anything and everything. This is the main reason that the possibility of seeing fishing on a betting site is something that people may see in the future.

While it hasn’t happened yet, fishing as a sport that can be bet on is sure to be the next hot item to betting item when it comes to online sports betting. Who knows maybe someone will become rich off of picking what the weight of that huge bass was!

If you are seeking to hike in the Grand Canyon, you are in for one of the most exciting and challenging hikes of your life. While it can be a desire for every serious hiker to navigate the Grand Canyon—one of the world’s greatest creations, you must be properly prepared to do so. If you are not, the odds of success are against you, much like they would be for an unskilled team in a sports betting system. To help you prepare to hike, here are some things to keep in mind.

The Grand Canyon is approximately 9.2 miles down to the center. If you are planning on hiking the whole 9 miles you should plan for an overnight trip, as hiking the entire trail in a day is dangerous. You can hike halfway down if you choose, but it is wise to make sure you have a tent, sleeping bag, and several people with you.

If you are doing a one day hike keep in mind that the hottest time of day in the Canyon is between noon and 4:00 P.M. So, it is best to hike your way down before noon, and then plan to spend a few hours in the canyon before hiking back up after 4:00.

You also must plan for the weather, and ensure that you will not suffer from dehydration should the weather change and you are stranded. Make sure that you have a lot of foods high in sodium; saltines or Ritz crackers are a good idea. Also make sure you have a gallon of water. While there is a rest station every 1.5 miles, it is always a good idea to have enough water to get your from one rest stop to the next.

Hiking the Canyon will be an unforgettable journey, and with these few simple tips, you can be prepared to enjoy it.

With an elevation gain of about 3,500 feet it is not a laid back trek but doable in a twelve mile round trip. If you decide on this one, the map is 82 N/8 of Banff National Park. The trail begins at Moraine Lake. To get there, you take the Lake Louise access road from the Trans-Canada Highway. The road will fork to the left to get to the lake. It is about an eight and a half mile trip from the Trans-Canada Highway.

You will leave Moraine Lake shore and wander up one and a half miles of switchbacks to Larch Valley Trail. This is the steepest part of the run so take it easy. You have a long way to go. You will want to stop and sit in the shade as often as you need. For hikers that are new, it is a good idea to intake water and small portions of “gorp” at intervals. This steep trail will take it out of you faster than you expect unless you are young! That varies with each person and how used to the elevation you are.

Hook to the left at Larch Valley Junction west. You will eventually wander out of the trees and into open slopes, facing a group of jagged peaks known as the Ten Peaks. You can figure out why the name. This will be your view for the duration of the trip. From Moraine Lake to Eiffel Lake will take you about three hours. Passing Eiffel Lake, you will enter rock slides and rubble. From there it is an open run to the pass with several routes to choose from, some marked with cairns. Snow patches remain into July and mountain goats are often seen in this region. Make sure to take lots of food and water. Stay at the pass for a long rest and an incredible view.

Hiking is a fantastic way to get in some exercise and have fun at the same time. There are many reasons why hiking is such a great outdoor activity. It provides a cardio workout, overall fitness benefits and lots of fresh air. This is the main reason why hiking is referred to as a body exercise, everything is involved.

This is one of those activities that can be enjoyed by the whole family or alone. Those persons who love the outdoors can combine both loves into one. This activity can be done for an hour or longer depending on the hikers’ desires.

Many sports enthusiast are also avid hikers. They thrive on the challenges hiking can provide such as exploring mountains and forests. Few activities offer as many opportunities for exploring for the adventurous person.

If you need a chance to get away from it all for a while, this is a perfect way to do so. When it comes to stress relief, hiking is right up there with the best methods.

Tips for Hiking Comfortably

Hiking can be done safely and comfortably if done properly. Some tips to make hiking fun and safe include:

•Wearing properly fitting shoes is paramount. Close-fitting shoes, shoes with heels or too little traction on the bottom are definite not recommended.
•Bring water so as to keep hydrated. Drinking water from streams and rivers may seem like fun but it can be dangerous. Staying hydrated is especially important when hiking during summer months. Traveling with purification tablets is a good idea just in case you need to drink from a stream.
•If hiking for a long distance, learn the proper walking techniques to minimize soreness and prevent injuries.

Hiking is considered by many to be the perfect sporting activity. It is also one of a few activities that can be done year round.

different kind of challenge in hiking is acclimating yourself to high altitudes. This especially holds true if mountaineering is your hiking brand-of-choice. It can be easy to forget that the air changes as you rise. You climb higher, the air gets thinner. Just because you’re still on terra firma does not mean the atmosphere remains the same. If you’ve ever read any mountaineering books, what can be most difficult about mountain climbing – aside from ascending any steep rock faces and escarpments – is getting used to the thinning air.

As you ascend and the air becomes thinner, you can feel almost asthmatic. No matter how deeply you inhale, you just can’t seem to get enough air. This is usually a sign that you need to stop, rest, and continue to get used to the thinning air. If you don’t rest and you continue to ascend without getting used to the new, lower levels of air and atmosphere, you may develop a case of Acute Mountain Sickness, or other types of Altitude Sickness, like High Altitude Pulmonary Edema or High Altitude Cerebral Edema. Though these sorts of things usually happen at over 8,000 feet, they can be fatal, and if you don’t take necessary precautions, they are almost inevitable.

When you’re high up, drink a lot of water, eat a lot of carbs, and maintain a steady pace. Don’t overexert yourself, don’t stagger your energy output, and try to avoid medications and inhalants to address the symptoms of high altitude. Everything is more potent, and has different effects, at high altitudes. Alcohol, for example. It is easier to get drunk at high altitude, and someone with a normally high tolerance becomes an everyday lightweight above 8,000 feet.

The key to high altitude is pacing. If you have a long climb in front of you, rest a day or two at logical stopping points so you can get acclimated to the new air. A little deliberation could save your life

One of hiking’s subtypes is underground – literally. Caving. It’s exactly as the name implies. Hiking in caves. Like mountaineering or canyoning, caving (or spelunking) can involve a variety of hiking and climbing technique, and depending on where you are caving, it might even involve a bit of swimming or kayaking too. It’s an outdoor sport with a truly indoor mentality.

In caves, you will get chances to see wildlife and mineral formations you may never get to see on the surface of the earth – bats, spiders, worms, and even fish. And to the educated eye, a journey underground is an exploration of earth’s diverse and often violent past. Underground you can see millions of years into earth’s history, with fossils, sediment lines, and formations that have taken millions of years to arrive where they are now.

You should never go caving alone. Some cave systems have hundreds of miles of complexity, and if you get lost, there may be little or no chance of survival. Light is your best friend underground, and without a guide, and especially without light, one wrong step could mean a hundred-foot plummet.

Some caves are more well-explored than others, and there are usually guided tours through some of the more popular caves in the world. A lot of American caves, for example, have already been explored and you can see their tour advertisements listed on billboards for tourist attractions along most of America’s cross-country highways. Though, despite the casual appeal, there is a serious pursuit behind the practice, and new ways to challenge yourself as a hiker, climber, and caver.

If you’re caving, having a good light source and cave-map are extremely helpful. Cave systems are like earth’s capillaries, and are just as three-dimensional. If you’re not sure where something goes, don’t go there. It’s a simple rule to follow as you plummet into the bowels of the earth.

The best and most rudimentary form of exercise is a good, long hike. It’s easy to lace up your shoes, step out of the door, and wander into the woods. Some trails are easier than others, and some are more secluded. One of the reasons that anyone would want to hike is for the seclusion and to silence the outside world for a long morning afternoon.

However, weather can turn, you can twist your ankle, or get dehydrated easily depending on how hard you’re hiking or how dry the weather is. While it’s tempting to leave everything behind as you walk into the outdoors, there are a few things you can bring along to aide in your journey without bringing too much of the noisy world with them.

As always, a compass is a hiker’s best friend. Some trails dwindle and disappear and it’s easy to get lost in the woods. If you get lost, you can spend hours walking in circles without knowing it. If you know where your roads are and which direction is ‘out,’ then a compass get you out of an otherwise sticky situation.

Equally as important is remembering to bring along some water. Fill up a canteen and strap it around your shoulder, or invest in a backpack-style water bladder, which makes it easy to drink and easy to carry. If things get rough, you need to be able to think clearly, and staying hydrated is key.

Finally – and people don’t often consider the usefulness of this – bring a whistle. Say you’re hiking, you twist your ankle, and fall into a small ravine. You’re fine, but your leg is too hurt to crawl out. Yelling repeatedly can harm your throat and dry you out. You need to conserve energy and water incase someone doesn’t come by for a while. Whistles are louder than your shouts for help, and while they may annoy you, having one could possibly save your life.

Hiking can be fun, but it can also be dangerous. Preparedness is key for enjoyment.

Though nature and its beauty has been romanticized by poets, photographers, and other artists for thousands of years, it can also provide a wide host of dangers. For the safety-conscious hiker, being aware of these dangers can – in some cases – make the difference between life and death. Different areas of the country pose different types of threats, so preparedness begins with one simple maxim: know where you are.

A lot of people have been deterred from all types of hiking altogether, as a fear of nature seems to be an endemic philosophy in our technological society. It is often portrayed in modern films as dominating, terrible, and absolutely unforgiving. While nature does operate with its own medium and mode, it is partially nature’s indifference which makes it so beautiful. Though it may be a bit abstract, it is important to regard nature as having a mind of its own, and approach it with respect and awe. In other words, serve it, and let it serve you.

Part of the process of respect begins with familiarizing yourself with the flora and fauna of the area. For example, diamondback rattlesnakes are much more of a threat in the Arizona deserts than they are in the Pacific Northwest. The English Yew, on the other hand, with its poisonous evergreen branches and toxic touch, is all over the Pacific Northwest, but nowhere to be found in the hot swamps of the Florida Everglades. Knowing what plants are poisonous, being able to identify toxic berries and mushrooms, and knowing venomous and non-venemous animal species involve a lot of research, but for the serious hiker, this knowledge can save your life.

For example, the difference between the highly venomous Coral Snake, marked by its red, yellow, and black rings, and the non-venomous, eerily similar Erythrolampurs Aesculapii, or ‘False Coral Snake,’ marked by its red, black, and yellow rings, is one that can keep you on the trails and out of the hospital.

And if you’ve ever been camping, you’ve probably had a fire going. Perhaps you were making some dinner, toasting some marshmallows, or maybe even boiling some water for some coffee. If you’re in the woods, having a good fire can be your best friend, but left untended or improperly prepared, it can quickly turn into your worst enemy. There are a few important precautions to take when you’re out spending a day in the woods, hiking, camping, and everything else.

First, whatever spot you pick to make a fire, do it away from brush, dry trees, and other fire hazards. Your best option is an open area in a clearing where sparks won’t jump from the fire onto a tree or a pile of dry leaves. To ensure the fire stays controlled, make a perimeter around it using rocks, dirt, sand, and whatever else might be used as a retardant. Finally, when you’re done with the fire, douse it amply with water and dirt to ensure that once it’s out, it stays out.

The embers at the root of the fire have a tendency to roost and reignite, so when you’re putting out a fire, mix it around and get it as wet as possible. And if you don’t have any water you want to spare, you can always urinate on the fire site too. It doesn’t smell the best, but it’s economical.

Finally, you should avoid making new fire sites whenever possible. The whole point of trail systems and prior camping sites is that you try to leave as little of a footprint as you can when you are out exploring the wilderness. The woods are to be respected, as are all the forces of nature, and nothing is more naturally destructive than fire. Therefore, in the woods, fire only when necessary.

That is, before the true influence of agriculture in America, the country was wooded from coast to coast. Of course, this is a grossly simple oversight. Native Americans were tilling parts of the land before Europe arrived, though it certainly wasn’t as aggressive of a farming style as was the Europeans.

Nonetheless, America’s plains were maintained by the large herds of bison and other grazing creatures, and today they still stand as a testament to North America’s diverse animal history. The bison were slaughtered and most of the animals are gone, but the plains and prairies remain. And for hikers who are tired of the popularity of the woods and the attention those draw, prairie hiking is just as fun and exploratory of a way to experience America’s still ranging diversity of flora and fauna.

On the prairie there are insects and different kinds of birds and mammals that you wouldn’t otherwise see in the forest, and the range of grasses and flowers across the prairie is extensive. As you stand and look across the horizon of the prairie, it’s a different sort of feeling that you might experience simply looking through a screen of trees in the forest. You realize how truly large the land is.

One of the problems being in the plains, however, is the intensity of the sun and weather. If you’re out in the plains in the summer, bring extra water and sunscreen to shield you from the unforgiving rays and exposure to the sun itself. And if you’re in the plains during a storm, seek cover quickly, since lightning strikes have a potential to seek out the tallest object around. Other than that, enjoy the plains – a geography unique to America.

There are trees, brooks, creeks, stone formations, birds, and even the occasional wandering mammal. It’s easy for people to romanticize nature, because it can be beautiful and powerful. But, if we think about it hard enough, nature can also be pesky too. Specifically when it comes to insects. The drifting afternoon bumble-bee can be peaceful to watch as he drinks the pollen out of some swaying flowers, and as dusk settles, watching the lightning bugs flicker through the trees can be surreal and sublime, but what about other bugs? Spiders, beetles, caterpillars, and the worst of them all – mosquitoes.

A damp weekend can make for a bad month of hiking, with mosquitoes and their nests hiding even in dried, upturned leaves. While spiders, beetles, and other bottom-feeding or predatory insects can be intimidating, none of them are as pesky as the mosquito. Plus, mosquitoes, aside from leaving itchy bites, can also carry dangerous and possibly deadly viruses. Using insect repellant can help, though not all insect repellants are created equal.

If you want to lessen your chemical footprint and forego repellant, limit your time outdoors to late mornings and early afternoons. Mosquitoes seem to be outside more often from dusk to dawn. If you’re camping or having an outdoor barbeque, you can burn insect repellant candles, but bringing fire into the woods on a hike isn’t the best idea, in which case you need a good spray-or-rub-on repellant.

Products containing N,N-diethyl-3-methylbenzamide, or DEET serve as the best chemical protection against mosquitoes, and are available on the market in doses up to 100%, though you don’t really need anything with more than a 50% concentration. Eucalyptus oil has also been proven to work well as a repellant, if you are worried about DEET’s interaction with your skin. Additionally, you can get clothing laced with Permethrin, which not only covers the skin, but acts as a pesticide as well.

Because of the diseases carried by some insects, sometimes a repellant is the hiker’s best form of protection.

Venturing off the trail can lead to a complicated set of problems that affect not only the hiker, but also the system hiked in to. There are, however, times when doing hiking off the beaten path is the hiker’s whole intention. Of course, this shouldn’t be attempted by everyone, but for the hiker looking for a new challenge, ‘rogaining’ is a perfect solution.

Rogaining is a hiking trip directed by direction and orientation. You face yourself in a certain direction, and utilizing systems of maps, compasses, and perhaps even global-positioning systems, you set out across a given country or land plot to your ultimate destination. Some people will have certain landmarks they wish to find on their rogaining trip, and orient themselves that way.

Rogaining gets its name from the first names of the principle men and women who invented the sport, Rod Phillips, Gail Davis and Neil Phillips, an Australian ‘rover’ crew who set out to explore their country in a 24-hour cross-country excursion. ROGAINE can also mean ‘Rugged Outdoor Group Activity Involving Navigation and Endurance,’ and either use is correct.

The sport as a whole involves a lot of endurance, agility, speed, and know-how for navigating the complexities of any country’s geography and geology. You may happen upon a river, a canyon, a gorge, or an impasse, and know how to navigate those obstacles quickly, without losing track of your eventual destination. The sport is a good way to learn the countryside and implement endurance and survival skills. And if you’re good enough, you can join the annual Rogaine championships, usually held in Australia or New Zealand.

But the true attraction to the sport is its versatility. Pick your own checkpoints, make your own competition. Have fun.

Traditionally, hiking is a fairly relaxed enterprise wherein the hiker has time to enjoy nature, wildlife, and scenery all while burning calories and connecting with the non-urbanized world. Of course, some people aren’t content to merely walk and dabble on light trails with small ascents and short, closed circuits. Sometimes you will be hiking and happen upon a creek, a boulder collection, or a tough root system, and then what do you do? The fledgling hiker might turn around, but the more adventurous among us will welcome the difficulty with open arms.

The hikers who found this challenge invigorating sought out new terrain to conquer, and soon enough, ‘Canyoning’ was born. Also called canyoneering, this form of hiking is a more down-tuned version of mountaineering, though often times it can involve just as much skill and tenacity as even the most demanding of hiking or mountain sports. Often times in canyoning, the same sort of equipment employed in mountaineering will be used, and sometimes, even technical jumping, swimming, and climbing will be involved.

The whole reason anyone might go canyoning is for the adventure. There is a feeling of exhilaration the hiker experiences when he or she conquers a tough hill, serious climb, or technical descent. Canyoning amplifies the challenge and therefore amplifies the exhilaration. When you steep rock faces, waterfalls, unpredictable terrain, and awesome interactions with nature, you get canyoning.

Some of the best places to canyon are in Australia, Spain, France, Italy, Mexico, Costa Rica, and the United States. Of course, different canyons offer different challenges, but the experience is the same. Dangerous and thrilling. Different skills can be utilized too, depending on the canyon. Of course, the canyoneer will have to keep an eye out for the occasional falling rocks, flash floods, and roosting snake, scorpion, or lizard, but sport provides awesome photo opportunities and a way to experience nature outside the pages of a book.
